You are on this list because you signed my mailing list at a concert or otherwise asked to be added. If you'd like to be deleted or if your address will change soon, let us know at tsunamiinc@aol.com. Please don't forward jokes, news items, virus warnings or petitions. I love personal notes from fans, though, and try to answer every email. Feel free to forward this newsletter to your friends, especially if I'm going to be performing in their area. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Table of Contents ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 1. Performances! 2. Classes 3. Welcome and general blabbing ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Hey everyone! I hope you had a great holiday. The last of my Southwest tour went well. I especially enjoyed the scenery around Moab, Utah. With its majestic canyons, it's one of the most beautiful places on earth. Leaving this gorgeous place, I got to drive through Monument Valley. Breath taking. My apologies to anyone who received last month's newsletter more than once. AOL burped big time. I sent it a case of Tums. I sent an inquiry to a venue in California recently. The booker went to my website and read the section about classes, noting that I'd quoted Janis Joplin. (She said that she didn't write songs, she "made them up.") His partner is Janis' sister. Small world, eh? Except for brief forays to Maryland and Florida, I'm home for the next two months, doing some gigs in the area and teaching classes. All of my January gigs are shared bills, some at a festival with many, and the two local ones with Wishing Chair (http://www.terrakin.com) and The Therapy Sisters (http://www.thetherapysisters.com). In addition to doing our own sets, we'll be doing some numbers together. Should be big fun and folks, I don't share bills with sucky performers. At the Florida festival, I'm in a contest with a bunch of others. Please come cheer me on! I'll also be in a round robin elsewhere at the festival that isn't part of the contest. Even if I wasn't going to be there, I'd encourage you to go. They have a great line-up (Dave Nachmanoff and Amy Carol Webb are two of my favorites) and for you gay folks, you should know that they're gay friendly. This is the place where I got a standing ovation for "I Wanna Be A Straight Guy." Bless their hearts. Speaking of Dave Nachmanoff, he recently had a bunch of instruments stolen. If you live in or near Davis, CA, work at a music store, cruise eBay or otherwise come into contact with instruments for sale, write to me. I'll send you a list of what was stolen so we can help Dave out. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 4. January and February classes ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I'm teaching a whole slew of classes in the NC triangle cities area. Classes are open to all adults; you don't have to be a Duke student. For registration, contact the venue. For more about class content or to register for Bellydance or private songwriting lessons, contact me: tsunamiinc@aol.com. Beginning Bellydance, Sundays (Jan. 5, 12, 26 and February 2, 15, 23), 5:30-6:30 pm, 501 Washington St, Durham, www.yogaspot.com for directions. This sensual Middle Eastern dance is great fun and low impact exercise for women and men of all ages. $50 for 5 classes, $12 for one. You don't have to take all the classes - drop in anytime. Private songwriting lessons in Durham for the month of January and February, Wednesday afternoons and evenings. tsunamiinc@aol.com Songwriting, ArtsCenter, Carrboro, Monday nights, January 27 - February 17, www.artscenterlive.org, 919-929-2787. Songwriting for beginners or for more experienced writers who want a slower paced class. With fun exercises and discussion we'll cover all the fundamentals. Singer-Songwriter Performance Lab, Duke Short Course, Durham, Tuesday nights, February 4 - 18, www.learnmore.duke.edu/shortcourse/index.html. We'll focus on music, performance stagecraft, stage business, and audience building.. You will perform in each of the two sessions, then, for the final session, present your music in a local public setting. Getting Gigs, ArtsCenter, Carrboro, February 13, www.artscenterlive.org, 919-929-2787. For musicians who want to gig and get paid for it. We'll cover finding venues, talking with bookers, putting together publicity, negotiating with venues and getting the gig! Telling Your Own Story, Duke Short Course, Durham, February 16, 1-4 pm, www.learnmore.duke.edu/shortcourse/index.html. Through games and exercises, you'll explore some of your memories as inspiration for composing meaningful songs lyrics and/or using it in other kinds of creative work, such as journal writing, storytelling, non-fiction or fiction writing, or visual art. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 5. Listen is one of the best CDs of 2002! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The producers of Audiofile, the music segment of the radio show This Way Out, listed Listen as one of the best CDs of 2002! You can hear their year-end show at http://www.thiswayout.org. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 6. This Way Out ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ This Way Out, the world's only internationally distributed radio program focusing on gay, lesbian, bi, and trans issues and culture, is facing a struggle for survival. To help rally people to their cause, they're offering supporters copies of two classic documentaries and a popular music program as thank you gifts for their tax-deductible contributions. The three programs chosen to entice support are: "Diminished Capacity," the story of the Milk-Mosocne assassinations and their aftermath, "The National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights Radio Documentary," a chronicle of the first such demonstration in the U.S. capital, and the "AudioFile 2002 Year in Review," a look back at the year's queer music highlights. The latter features my music. The 14-year-old program is heard on over 125 radio stations all over the world, on Radio For Peace International global short-wave, and online on PlanetOut.com. Its reach, production quality, and longevity make it seem like it must be a big-budget project, but in reality it has always been a very lean, largely volunteer-driven operation. Contributions of any size are welcomed. A minimum donation of $25 is requested for the "AudioFile 2002 Year in Review." For a minimum of $50, supporters may ask for either "Diminished Capacity" or "The National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights Radio Documentary"; both documentaries can be had for a minimum $75 donation. Those contributing $100 or more may request all three gifts. Checks to Overnight Productions, Inc. can be sent to P.O. Box 38327, Los Angeles, CA, 90038. For more information, you can write to that address, e-mail TWORadio@aol.com, call 818-986-4106, or see their Web site at www.thiswayout.org. Don't let this important radio program die! Please send your donations. ~~~~~~~~~~ 7. CD Sale ~~~~~~~~~~ It's time to clean out some inventory here at the palatial Tsunami Records warehouse so we're having a sale!
