From: TsunamiInc@aol.com Date: Tue, 1 Jun 1999 14:37:26 EDT Subject: The Jamie Anderson Newsletter To: DakotaAZ@aol.com Greetings! You are getting this newsletter because you signed my mailing list at a concert or emailed me and asked to be added. To be deleted, or to send mail to me personally, write to us at tsunamiinc@aol.com. Please don't forward virus warnings, petitions or jokes but do send personal notes. Feel free to forward this newsletter, especially if you know someone in one of the towns where I'm scheduled to perform. _____________________________________ Welcome to all the new subscribers from Dallas and New Orleans! I did concerts there last month and had big fun doing so. Usually, I only include news here about my work but this newsletter contains information about a few other things that I thought were important. _____________________________________ Drive All Night Reviews My newest release, Drive All Night, has gotten some wonderful reviews recently in The Feminist Bookstore News and in The Victory Review. Here's what Victory said: Yep, the title cut is an "on the road" song, and one you'll keep humming long after you've cooled your engine. This is Anderson's best collection yet, mostly new stuff with a couple of her classics on the caboose. ("Dark Chocolate," one of the most sensuous songs I've ever heard anybody sing, and "I Wanna Be A Straight Guy," classic Anderson humor and wit.) I saw Jamie play at Shakabrah Java last month (a coffeehouse in Tacoma, WA) and her concert was as funny, poignant, sensual and downright friendly as a concert can be. She has a way of making each person in the audience her best friend. This album feels like a conversation; singing about travel, loneliness, social concerns, friends' problems and kicking around life in general with a soft-toed shoe. Through it all Anderson maintains a light heart and witty style. You'll wanna hug this album. A lyric sheet is included. The Advocate featured me in a recent article about out musicians. I'm on page 52 of the May 11 issue. It's a great article that also features one of my favorite performers Melissa Ferrick. ______________________________________ Battle of the Amazons When I was in St. Paul in April, I learned that Amazon Bookstore, a great women's bookstore in Minneapolis, is suing their giant competitor Amazon.com. Amazon Bookstore in Minneapolis has been in business for 30 years and they've had enough of the extra work involved in telling people that they are not associated in any way with that other Amazon. They filed suit for willful trademark infringement in mid April. More details are available at this and other newspaper sites: http://cnnfn.com/digitaljam/newsbytes/129318.html Amazon Bookstore's website is: www.amazonfembks.com, but I don't think there's anything posted relating to the lawsuit. Remember to support independent bookstores! ____________________________________ Dr. Demento plays Jamie Anderson? It could happen! The show recently recieved "Drive All Night." Doncha think "I Wanna Be A Straight Guy" would be PERFECT for the show? (And the national airplay would sure increase sales.) You can help by going to the Demento web site and requesting my song. http://www.clamhead.com/drdrequest.html ____________________________________ On the Folk DJ Chart! Folk Dj is an internet list for, well, folk dj's. It has hundreds of subscribers. For the month of April, Drive All Night was number 11 in terms of airplay. When you're competing against cool acts like Dar Williams and The Cheiftans, that's a pretty important spot. Cool eh? (Sorry but figures for May haven't been posted yet.) _____________________________________ Outvoice Outvoice is a great resource for those who are interested in queer music. Check out their website for more info: http://www.outvoice.com. And while you're there, vote for my recording! Here's where my work placed on their latest charts: Top Albums: 9. Drive All Night 41. Never Assume Top Tracks: 8. With My Smile 10. I Wanna Be A Straight Guy 75. Drive All Night 86. Just Another Day ______________________________________ And Speaking of cool lists ... If you haven't discovered Indiegrrl, you might want to check them out, especially if you're a performer or otherwise involved in the business of independent women's music (of all genres). Go to http://www.onelist.com to sign up. There's also an official Indiegrrl site at http://www.indiegrrl.com. In addition to the list, Indiegrrl is involved in a lot of other projects, including some tours for approved members. I'm doing two Indiegrrl concerts in North Carolina in July with several other artists. __________________________________ Choral songs If you're in a chorus, you might want to consider doing one of my songs. Three of my tunes -- "When They Know Who We Are," "No Closet" and "A Family of Friends" -- are arranged for women's voices. If your music selection committee is interested in one or all of the songs, we can send a tape. I'm looking for someone to notate the piano arrangement for A Family of Friends. Also needed is someone who can arrange and notate all three songs for mixed choruses. If someone from your chorus can do that, I can waive the charge to perform the song if I am given the rights to give it to other choruses. Write to me for more information. And while I'm on the subject, writing and performing songs is the only way I make a living. So, when a chorus performs one of my songs, I ask for a small fee. This way, I can pay myself, the arranger and (if there is one) the co-writer. Once in awhile, I hear about a chorus performing my songs but I am not paid. While it's wonderful that they like my work well enough to perform it, it would be even more wonderful if I could be paid for my work. I know that choruses are often run on a shoestring but my income is very tiny too. Okay, off the soapbox. It's too high up here. _______________________________________ It's Elementary This important documentary about gay issues in schools is being shown on PBS in many markets in June. The good news is that two thirds of the major markets will be showing this entertaining and informative film. The bad news is that one third of the stations have made no decision or have decided not to air it at all (including my hometown station!!). Here are the stations who have decided not to air it. If this includes the city where you decide, contact them: Cleveland, WVIZ, 216-398-2800 Detroit, WTVS, 313-873-7200, Viewer_Services@wtvs.pbs.org Orlando, WMFE, 407-273-2300, wmfe@magic.net Memphis, WKNO, 901-458-2521, wknopi@wkno.org Chapel Hill, NC, WUNC And if your local PBS is broadcasting it, tell them they made a good decision. For a full list of air dates, go to www.womedia.org. ___________________________________ Alice DiMicele in concert! I don't usually post information about other performer's gigs but this one is important. Alice is a singer-songwriter I greatly admire and her special birthday party concert has not been publicized well, due to some miscommunication with the concert producer. If you're in the Monterey / Santa Cruz, CA area, do go see this great performer. I guarantee you'll love her strong gorgeous voice and powerful songs. Saturday, June 5, 8 pm, Carlton Hall, Monterey Religious Science, 400 W. Franklin at Pacific, 831-373-7379 For more info about Alice's music: http://AliceOtterMusic.listbot.com ________________________________________ Jamie Anderson on tour!! Here's the latest list.
