Working in the Goldenrod booth gave me the opportunity to meet some of you and to introduce you to new music. I'm a big music junkie so working there was almost not a job. Of course, that meant that most of my paycheck went to purchasing new music. Here's what I came home with: Maria Zemantauski, Mrs. Laughinghouse Irene Farrera, Soy De Ti Therese Edell, From Women's Faces Plus Timbre, Sophie B. Hawkins Plus a bunch of sale CDs that included folk, world music, a cappella and celtic. It's a curse to have eclectic tastes and an employee discount. Okay, not a curse to my well-being in general, just to my wallet. Maria and Irene performed on the day stage at the festival and damn, was that hot. Maria is a wonderful classical/flamenco guitarist and Irene, a fiery latin singer/composer/guitarist. If you ever get a chance to hear them (they perform together and separately), do go! The Sophie B. Hawkins CD was popular among Goldenrod customers. When I listened to it to see what the fuss was all about, I put in my order. Nice to hear an out performer on a mainstream label. Heck, it's always nice to hear an out performer. The Therese Edell CD was one I was meaning to get ever since I heard of it's release. Her music was the first women's music I'd ever heard so her songs mean a great deal to me. I have the original LP but I wanted to update. In addition to the songs from the original recording, there are some newer tunes. If you like warm alto voices and melt-your-heart songs, then you want this CD. I did my job so well, we sold out of Mimi Fox's new recording. (Sorry the title escapes me right now.) If your weakness is well-played jazz guitar backed by a very tasty band, buy this CD. Goldenrod probably has it back in stock now. These CDs can be ordered from www.goldenrod.com or www.ladyslipper.org. They also carry my recordings. Okay, enough blabbing about other people's music. I had the chance to do a couple of campfire performances at the festival. The turnout was terrific each night. I loved the intimacy of playing at a small campfire. And it was great to be stopped while walking around the festival by women who'd been to the campfires or who'd heard me play in their hometown. As I've explained in previous newsletters, the Michigan festival has never hired me to perform. I'd like to, of course, and you can help by writing or calling them to request me. Be nice, now. They get lots of press kits and CDs -- I'm sure that choosing performers is an overwhelming task. Here's how to reach them: PO Box 7430, Berkeley, CA, 94707, 510-652-5441. I don't have an email address handy but they have a website: www.michfest.com. Oh, and I KNOW you know better than to say "Jamie Anderson told me to contact you." __________ Honorable Mention! I received an honorable mention in the Napa Valley Music Festival singer-songwriter contest. I was a finalist last year. For more info about this festival: www.napafest.com. __________ Music websites I've come upon some websites you music junkies might enjoy: www.singer-songwriter.com has many links to singer-songwriters. www.music-cal.com/ is a calendar of live music. You can do a search on a particular city or performer and find out who's playing where. __________ Oops I lost an email from a woman I met at the Michigan Festival. She's from Cheyenne, Wyoming. If you're on this list, write to me again and I promise not to lose it! __________ Victoria Brownworth Victoria Brownworth is a writer whose columns appear every other Tuesday in the Philadelphia Daily News. This Pulitzer Prize nominee also writes and edits mysteries. Her work is very important to lesbigay and trans folks as well as other communities. I know her from her book of essays "Too Queer" and other writings. Victoria has a progressive neuromuscular disease that has left her in a wheelchair. In a letter forwarded to me, she's outlined her present situation and it ain't good, folks. She's applied for disability but hasn't yet been approved. Her ex left her with a lot of debt so she's in danger of becoming homeless. If you can contribute anything to help her out, I'm sure it would be greatly appreciated: Victoria Brownworth, c/o Hazel McPhee, 311 W. Seymour St., Philadelphia, PA, 19144. __________ Outvoice The Outvoice charts are updated weekly. Cast your votes for moi at www.outvoice.com. __________ Sale Thanks to everyone who placed an order during our fabulous August sale. Most orders were shipped via special fourth class mail. It takes longer than first class mail so be patient if you haven't yet received your order. The sale is now over. We may run another one next year sometime. __________ Wanna Book Me? I've got some free dates in my upcoming tours. Email me if you can help fill in any dates. I've worked with a lot of first-time producers so even if you've never produced a show, don't worry.
