You are on this list because you signed my mailing list at a concert or wrote to me and asked to be added. If you'd like to be deleted or if your address will change soon, please let us know at tsunamiinc@aol.com. Please don't forward jokes, virus warnings or petitions. I love personal notes from fans, though, and try to answer every email. Feel free to forward this newsletter to your friends, especially if I'm going to be performing in their area. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Table of Contents ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 1. Tour, tour, tour ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Welcome and General News ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Greetings Jamieheads! Welcome to another edition of my newsletter in which I blab about whatever strikes my fancy. Some of it even has to do with my music. What an interesting tour this last one was - from quiet house concerts to rowdy bars. It was great playin' for y'all. It's why I love this job. Like I've said before, I could stay at home and play for my cats and while they're appreciative they'd rather have tuna than music. Provincetown was a hard gig. I loved the performing part - thanks so much to everyone who found the club where I was playing (maybe I should've supplied Girl Scouts with compasses?) - but hated the rest of it. As some of you know, performers in Provincetown are expected to pay all of their own expenses and do their own advertising. I paid the same as the tourists for my housing and other expenses so it cost me about $100 a day to be there. While the club where I worked paid for a couple of ads, the rest of the promotion was up to me. Like most performers, I handed out flyers in the streets to passersby. That was fun for a couple of days but after a while I felt like a telephone solicitor only I could see the people who were hanging up on me. I've talked to other performers about Provincetown and no one seems to like it much, even if they're playing in a bigger club and don't have to hand out those damn flyers. There's just something about that place, ya know? I'm not telling anyone not to go - I've been when I wasn't working and had a great time - but it's a hard place for performers. I'd go again if someone booked me for a big show at Town Hall but I won't do the clubs again. Right after Provincetown, I opened for Cris Williamson and got to hear her for the third time this year. It was wonderful to relax among that friendly crowd and hear Cris' beautiful voice soar above us all. The next night I went to the same venue to hear Karla Bonoff, a favorite of mine who I'd never seen in concert before. Live music is a powerful healer and both concerts did me a world of good. In November, I have the great pleasure of returning to my home state of Arizona for some gigs. Fire up the enchiladas, I'm coming! There's a tour schedule at the end of the newsletter. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Ferron quote ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "She's the anti-Ferron." -- Suzanne Westenhoefer For the last few years I've been using this quote from Suzanne about my work:. I always thought it was very funny and so did most people but a few folks have asked me about it, not understanding it and thinking it meant I was against Ferron. Far from it - I'm a fan and Ferron knew I was using the quote. (So did Suzanne.) Because of the confusion, and because it's time for a new quote, I've decided to stop using it. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Jamie versus KD in Phoenix ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ No, this isn't a new WWF match. I found out recently that KD Lang is performing the same night I am in Phoenix on November 18. I'm producing this show and was very careful in making sure there were no other events that night. I planned months in advance, put a deposit down on the venue and paid for flyers to be made. I thought about canceling the show but I'd be out a couple hundred dollars if I did. If I go ahead with the show, I have a chance of at least breaking even. So, if you live in or near Phoenix (or know someone who does) and you don't have a kazillion bucks to see that other lesbian performer, please, please come to my show. I promise I won't wear my jammies on stage. (Did anyone else see that concert on Lifetime a week or so ago? I swear KD was wearing pajamas on stage. Someone should dress her. Yeah, I know, a lot of you would like to undress her.) This is one of the things that makes me angry about mainstream promoters and performers. They have no idea what's going on in the women's community so they plan these events on the same night as something else with the same audience. It can ruin a small venue or performer for that night or that city. Yeah, I know that KD probably had no way to know about my concert but the promoter could've easily done some research. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Holiday gift ideas and independent music ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ What better way to surprise your sweetheart, family member or friend than to give them one of my recordings! Goldenrod (www.goldenrod.com) has the best selection of my CDs and tapes. Other good places are www.ladyslipper.org and www.hrmusic.com. And while I'm at it, check out the other independent artists at these sites. There's a whole world of great music that you won't hear on mainstream radio or TV. Other sites to check out are www.mp3.com, and www.indiegrrl.com. For the songwriter in your life, consider getting them Songwriting and the Guitar. It's published by String Letter Publishing, the same folks who put out Acoustic Guitar. There are informative articles (for all levels of songwriters) from James Taylor, the Indigo Girls, Patty Larkin and moi. You can purchase a book at my concerts, from better bookstores or from Music Dispatch (800-637-2852). ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Thanks!!! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I have the best fans on the planet. Not only do you come to shows and buy recordings for yourself and friends, but you give me cheesecake and cookies when I'm on the road. A fan came to my Northampton gig with a plate of fresh baked delicacies. A kind soul at one of my Provincetown gigs gave me the mystery she was reading after we talked about how much I liked the writer. Another night there, a bunch of friendly women took me out to dinner. Over 20 of you lent me enough money to put out Drive All Night. A couple of times, I've been stranded with no housing and fans have taken me in for the night. Not only do I get lovely places to stay but you send me off with lunches, careful directions and good conversation to think about as I drive. You encourage your friends and family to come to my gigs. You tell me how much you appreciate my music. Now it's my turn to tell you how much I appreciate all that you do for me. You mean a lot to me. Thanks!! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ VOTE ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Vote, vote, vote! We're only six seats away from a Democratic majority in the House. A few states have anti-gay measures on the ballot. Make your voice heard! I found a cool website that has info about thousands of candidates, from local races to national. You can search the site for certain issues and see who you'd like to support. Check out the site at www.vote-smart.org. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Tour, tour, tour ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 11/18 Phoenix, AZ, 8 pm, Community Church of Hope, 4400 N.
