To: DakotaAZ@aol.com MIME-Version: 1.0 Status: RO It's time for yet another edition of the astute and entertaining Jamie Anderson newsletter! You are on this list because you signed my mailing list at a concert or wrote to me and asked to be added. If you'd like to be deleted or if your address will change soon, please let us know at tsunamiinc@aol.com. Please don't forward jokes, news items, virus warnings or petitions. I love personal notes from fans, though, and try to answer every email. Feel free to forward this newsletter to your friends, especially if I'm going to be performing in their area. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Table of Contents ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 1. Welcome and general news 2. Acoustic Guitar article 3. Gift ideas 4. Give 'em a nudge for me 5. Florida? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Welcome and general news ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Ah, winter is here in the temperate South. I won't pretend we can compete with you folks in the Northeast or Midwest but it's been in the 40's during the day here. They keep forecasting snow and it scares me, especially since Durham has two snow plows. Okay, maybe three but that last one is a tiny pick up with a little blade and Barney Fife behind the wheel. It sure was great to tour in the desert this past few weeks. It does this folksinger's heart good to gaze at the Catalinas and take in a lovely sunset or two. I stuffed myself with great Mexican food (how many green chilis can one musican hold?) and played for some fine crowds. Had a great time after many of the shows, too. Most memorable was a dance party after my second Alamagordo gig. After one dance, with my heart about to catapult out of my chest, I was reminded that we were at 6,000 feet. Damn and I thought it was just 'cause I'm over 40. Speaking of Alamagordo, both concerts were at the Good Life Inn, a lovely bed and breakfast I highly recommend. Owned and operated by Gillian and Melise Zoe (fogive me ladies if I've slaughtered your names), this beautiful inn is in the mountains in southern New Mexico. There's a jacuzzi, beautiful views and great food. Learn more at www.goodlifeinn.com. Tell 'em Jamie sent ya. One of the favorite parts of my job is getting to meet all of you. I had a blast after my Albuquerque gig, hanging with everyone in the kitchen as the resident ASL (American Sign Language) experts told amusing stories. Apparently, the MSL (Mexican Sign Language) sign for English is the same as the ASL sign for lesbian. Whoo hoo, that could make for some fun, eh? And the MSL sign for ninos (children) is the same as the ASL sign for gay. There's a regional ASL sign for cotton that means a sex act in another region. See the things I learn on tour? I ate my way through Silver City. Damn, what a potluck we had there -- THREE kinds of enchiladas plus homemade tamales, and, and É Thanks to everyone who contributed to the fund to get my iguana a vasectomy. At least, that's what the sign on the tip jar said. Thanks to everyone who came out on a school night in Las Cruces. I had a great time at my gigs in Arizona too. Thanks again to everyone who volunteered for those two shows. Special appreciation to Martie van der Voort for sharing the stage in Tucson and to In Concert for helping me out with a few details. If you live in Tucson, keep an eye out for the shows presented by In Concert, they're good folks. The only gig I have left for this year is in Cary, NC this Friday. More info below. Next month I'll be in Greensboro and in February, I'll be teaching two songwriting classes at Duke. E me if you want more info. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Acoustic Guitar article ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I have an article in the current issue (January 2001) of Acoustic Guitar, "Song Surfing: On-line Resources for Songwriters." You can get a hard copy of the magazine at most music stores and bookstores. There might be something at their web page too: www.acousticguitar.com. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Gift Ideas ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ If you're stumped about what to get Mom, think about a Jamie Anderson recording. Hey, maybe she'd LIKE "I Wanna Be A Straight Guy." Goldenrod (www.goldenrod.com) has the best selection of my work. You can also get my recordings at Ladyslipper (www.ladyslipper.org), Harmony Ridge (www.hrmusic.com) and a bunch of the usual net places like The Orchard as well as at independent music stores, women's bookstores and gay bookstores. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Give 'em a nudge for me ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Several bookers are now considering my work. Please put a bug in their ear and encourage them to book me: Olivia Cruises (info@oliviatravel.com, or 4400 Market St., Oakland, CA, 94608), Michigan Womyn's Music Festival (PO Box 7430, Berkeley, CA, 94707), and the Vancouver Folk Festival (vfmf@axionet.com or Box 381-916 W. Broadway, Vancouver, BC, V5Z 1K7, Canada). This is one of the ways bookers know who to hire. Be polite and don't forget to mention if you've been to their event before and would be encouraged to go again if they booked me. Gracias, everyone. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Florida? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ (No, this isn't about the recount but don't you think they should stop messing around with the Florida Supreme Court and just send 'em to Judge Judy? Damn would I like to see that show.) I've got a private engagement in Ft. Meyers on March 3. I'd like to do other gigs around Florida for March 2 or 4 but so far, I haven't rustled anything up. If you'd like to produce a show or know someone who might, give me a shout. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Tour, tour, tour ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ As always, check with the venue about the details before leaving for the show. 12/8 Cary, NC, 8 pm, Borders, 1751 Walnut St., 919-469-1930, free! 1/10 Greensboro, NC, 7:30 pm, Borders, 3605 High Point Rd., 336-218-0662, dbseal@aol.com, with Rob Seals and others, free! 2/5 Durham, NC, Songwriter's Circle class begins at Duke, www.learnmore.duke.edu 2/6 Durham, NC, Songwriting class begins at Duke, www.learnmore.duke.edu 2/8 Carrborro, NC, Getting Gigs workshop at the ArtsCenter, 919-929-2787 3/2 - 4 Florida 3/9 Tacoma, WA, 8 pm, Shakabrah Java, 2618 6th Ave., 253-572-4369, tjardes@ups.edu 3/10 Olympia, WA, 8 pm, Traditions CafŽ, 300 5th Ave. SW, 360-705-2819, www.traditionsfairtrade.com 3/11 Eugene, OR, diedrich@efn.org 3/15 Pomona, CA, Cal Poly, Downtown Arts Center 3/16 San Bernardino, CA, San Bernardino Valley College 3/18 San Diego, CA, 8 pm, Java Joes, 1956 Bacon St., 619-623-0356, http://javajoes.org, double bill with Mary Dolan (www.marydolan.com) 3/23 Berkeley, CA, 8 pm, Rose Street House of Music (performance), 510-594-4000 x 687, rosestreetmusic@aol.com, with others, no perfumes please 3/24 Berkeley, CA, afternoon, Rose Street House of Music (workshop) 3/24 Davis, CA, 7 pm, CafŽ Roma, 223 3rd St., 530-756-8260, duvalspk@jps.net, with Duval Speck and others 4/1 FL, Southern Women's Music Festival, with Kara Barnard, www.gaywomyn.org/festival 4/6 - 8 Healdsburg, CA, WoMaMu (Women Making Music), suedolf@cs.com, www.judyfjell.com 4/14 Decatur, IL, with Kara Barnard 4/20 Ft.
