Delivered-To: mbaya@svaha.com From: TsunamiInc@aol.com Date: Mon, 31 Jul 2000 14:13:31 EDT Subject: The Jamie Anderson Newsletter To: DakotaAZ@aol.com It's time for another edition of the Jamie Anderson newsletter! You are on this list because you signed my mailing list at a concert or wrote to me and asked to be added. If you'd like to be deleted or if your address will change soon, please let us know at tsunamiinc@aol.com. Please don't forward jokes, virus warnings or petitions. (Incidentally, most virus warnings and petitions are hoaxes. Check http://urbanlegends.miningco.com/ for more info.) I love personal notes from fans, though, and try to answer every email. Feel free to forward this newsletter to your friends, especially if I'm going to be performing in their area. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Table of Contents ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 1. General Blabbing 2. Contest Results! 3. Minneapolis Pride 4. Get free tickets to my Decatur and Phoenix shows 5. Michigan festival 6. Tour schedule ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ General Blabbing ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ It's been a relaxed month here at the palatial offices of Tsunami Recordings. Over Fourth of July weekend, I had two fabulous gigs - at Camp Pleiades (www.starcamp.com - check 'em out!) and in Durham at Enofest. Other than that, I've been home, playing the guitar, writing new songs and booking upcoming tours. Oh, and I had a week's vacation at the beach. Whoo hoo!! I'm really looking forward to the Michigan festival and to my gigs in Georgia and South Carolina. Look for more information later in the newsletter. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Contest Results! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Here it is - the moment you've all been waiting for - the winners from last month's contest: For most correct answers: First place (three way tie) -- Carol Harley, Diane Docis (Ohio) and Kathleen Burns (New Jersey) Second place -- Lorrie (Ohio) Funniest answers: Meredith (Maryland) Honorable Mention: Terrie Lemke (Tennessee) I wasn't going to have an honorable mention but when Terrie reminded me that I mention food and drink in at least nine songs - things even I'd forgotten - I had to give her a special prize. All the winners will receive a Jamie Anderson recording. First place winners will also receive an Oasis sampler CD. Here are the questions with the correct answers: 1. The poster from "A Family of Friends" (the compilation CD I co-produced) appears in what movie? "The Client" (a movie that starred Susan Sarandon, one of my favorite actors). Only a few of you got this one right, with many of you mentioning "Better Than Chocolate" and "Boys on the Side," two films that seemed obvious but not correct. IMHO "Better Than Chocolate" *should* have included my song "Dark Chocolate" but who asked me? Some of you, obviously trying for the funniest answer category, said "This is Spinal Tap," "Jesse Helms: The Early Years," "Chicken Run", "Terminator Two" and "Pricilla Queen of the Desert." That last one could have been a possibility, I guess, if I'd put out a dance mix version of "Dark Chocolate." Here's one of my favorite answers, from Lorrie in Ohio: Since I don't know the real answer but do believe in a Higher System of Justice (i.e. the one that saw to it that Newt Gingrich had a lesbian sister), I'll put forth my desperate hope that said poster appears in Dr. Laura's next promotional video. LOL!! 2. What is the title of my first Tsunami Records release? "Closer to Home." Some smart ass answered "Let's Get Wet!" Hmmm, maybe I'll make that the title of my next release. Incidentally, for a while I was sold out of this title. A few months ago I got a return from one of my distributors so I've got a few tapes in stock. You'll be able to purchase this recording at my next few concerts. 3. What famous country recording star is featured in one of my songs? Wynonna Judd. TWO of you answered Britney Spears. I may have her boobs (mine are real) but I've never mentioned her in a song. 4. What brand of guitar do I currently play in performance? Larrivee. NO ONE got this right although someone did answer "Guild", the brand of guitar I used to play in concert. Larrivees are made in British Columbia and are great little guitars. I still play the Guild occasionally but usually, it's the Larrivee. 5. I mention food in three of my songs. Name at least one. Bonus if you can name all three. I was looking for Dark Chocolate, Potato Chips and So Much Pleasure (cheesecake isn't exactly mentioned but I do say in concert that it was inspired by really great cheesecake). But dang, I forgot about all those other songs, most of them mentioned in Terrie's entry. Food is so important that I feel compelled to mention it in almost every song. Toe jam and hairballs are NOT considered food. Yes, two people actually said that. I had no idea my fans could be so disgusting when I have the most tasteful show in the history of folk music. 6. Which major women's music festival has never booked me to play on one of their stages? The Michigan Womyn's Music Festival. They've hired me to teach intensive workshops but never to perform on stage. Last year, as well as this year, I'll be doing some informal performances at the triangle fire. (More details later in the newsletter.) One of you answered "North-Central Sapphic Vegetarian Drumming and Cronefest". LOL! And someone else said "If they've never booked you, I'm sure no one's ever heard of it." 7. I've had several occasions to appear in public in a sequined bra. Why? To bellydance. Some of you answered "twirl the baton" but it's not something I usually do in a beaded bra. One of you answered "to work as Madonna's stunt double." Sounds like an easy gig, I'll take it. Anyone know how to reach Madonna's agent? 8. Who said this about me: "She's the anti-Ferron."? Suzanne Westenhoefer. (If you haven't done it already, go up to the photo gallery on my website and check out the photo of me and Suzanne with Cris Williamson.) I also got answers like "Albert Einstein," "Jerry Falwell," and "Dan Quayle." 9. Kevin Barry is a guitarist who appeared on my latest recording "Drive All Night." He tours with someone more famous than me. Who is it? Paula Cole. In fact, you can see a photo of him on the back of Cole's latest release. Many of you said "There's someone more famous than you?" That was really the answer I was looking for É 10. Who is the funny babe who produced my "Never Assume" CD? Lisa Koch. 11. Besides producing my album, what is she known for? Fabulous Dyketones (a former member), Dos Fallopia, various cabaret musicals, hairballs (from "When Cats Take Over the World") and other funny stuff. For more info about her work: www.heylisa.com. 12. Where did I live before Durham, NC? Tucson, AZ. Some of you answered Phoenix and while I did live there for many years, I last lived in Tucson. 13. What is your name and address so can I stay with you on my next tour? KIDDING. Okay, if you have a minimum of three cats, a hot tub and plenty of chocolate, I may be calling you - Two of you offered your neighbor's hot tub. Uh, you might want to check with them first. One of you said "For you I'll get three cats and a hot tub." Now THERE's dedication. Here are Meredith's answers. She won for funniest entry: >1. The poster from "A Family of Friends" (the compilation CD I co-produced) >appears in what movie? Thelma and Louise. Oh, that was the movie in which it should have appeared. Maybe if they'd left those husbands long before and expressed their true love for each other, they wouldn't have triggered that chain of events that eventually led them to the cliff. Denying one's lesbianism is a dangerous thing. >2. What is the title of my first Tsunami Records release? I think Never Assume was the first Tsumani one. >3. What famous country recording star is mentioned in one of my songs? Wynonna. Now if I were writing an ode to a singer, it would definitely be Dar Williams, lesbian-tease that she is. Oops, no, I'm supposed to be kissing up here. It would be Jamie Anderson. Definitely. >4. What brand of guitar do I currently play in performance? The question "Name any brand of guitar" would have been challenging enough for me. >5. I mention food in three of my songs. Name at least one. Bonus if you can >name all three. Name the foods? chocolate more chocolate damnit, I have PMS, give me chocolate NOW (oh, and some cheesecake is okay too) >6. Which major women's music festival has never booked me to play on one of >their stages? Michigan, damn fools. >7. I've had several occasions to appear in public in a sequined bra. Why? I wouldn't have pegged you for a drag queen. Learn something new every day. (Unless this is a belly dancing thing.) >8. Who said this about me: "She's the anti-Ferron."? Suzanne Westenhoffer. Okay, while we're on the subject, could the morning show personalities on the radio station here have asked her any more moronic questions? My favorite was "is your girlfriend the dominant one in your relationship?" >9. Kevin Barry is a guitarist who appeared on my latest recording "Drive All >Night." He tours with someone more famous than me. Who is it? Elvis? >10. Who is the funny babe who produced my "Never Assume" CD? Babe? where? >11. Besides producing my album, what is she known for? Duh, being a babe. >12. Where did I live before Durham, NC? Phoenix. >13. What is your name and address so can I stay with you on my next tour? >KIDDING. Okay, if you have a minimum of three cats, a hot tub and plenty of >chocolate, I may be calling you -- We have a lesbian couple and a bitter single dyke (me), four cats, and a hound who tries her best to look ferocious. Guest sleeping arrangements aren't that spectacular--a futon in a room that contains lots of sports equipment. However, if you happen to be traveling with a cute single dyke with no animal allergies, tell her she can sleep in my bed with me. And one of the highlights on the house tour is the chocolate drawer. It's right next to the silverware drawer in the kitchen. I'm serious. Other highlights include the hockey room (also where that futon lives) and the camping closet. What did you expect from a houseful of dykes? Oh, and I wish we had a hot tub. Thanks, Meredith. To everyone else - I don't care if you're a cute single dyke, I am not going to give Meredith your address. She can find her own dates. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Minneapolis Pride ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I wasn't at Minneapolis Pride this year but my song "I'm Sorry" was! Here's what Rosey from Minnesota told me: While seated in the back of a pickup - on lawn chairs with a beach umbrella shading us, we were in a parking lot in the corner by the street and had a great view - across the street comes this large contingent of religious right folks with their signs, etc. They proceed to shout their rhetoric at us - so we just happened to have your CD with us - so we played "I'm sorry that you're straight" - the crowd of gays and lesbians that gathered on our side of the street began to sing along and we must have played it four times at a full volume through the morning between floats!!! Thank you so much for expressing our feelings so well in your song. You're quite welcome! That song has also been covered by a lot of drag queens. Hey, you get your fame where you can. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Get Free Tickets to My Decatur and Phoenix Shows ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I'm looking for someone to help with publicity for my August show in Decatur, GA and my November show in Phoenix, AZ. If you can post flyers around town and take them to a few events, let me know. I can give you a free ticket in exchange for your work. It also wouldn't hurt if you could call all your friends and encourage them to attend the show. I'm also looking for ticket takers and other help at the Phoenix show. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Michigan Festival ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I am teaching two intensive workshops: Writing and Performing a Funny Song (Tuesday, 9 - 12, area 15) and Bellydance for Beginners (Wednesday, 9 - 12, area 14). I'll also be teaching a shorter bellydance class Thursday, Saturday and Sunday morning, 9 - 10 in area 14. For the music class, bring paper and pen. Bring an instrument if you have one but it's not mandatory. For the dance classes, dress in something that you can easily move in and bring a scarf for your hips. We'll have to wear shoes (even though bellydance is usually done barefoot) because we won't have a dance floor. Once again I'll be doing a couple of informal performances at the Triangle Fire, otherwise known as the Fourth Stage. I'm performing Monday night at 8 pm and Friday night after the night stage ends. Does anyone have a battery powered amp I can borrow? It was hard to sing over the shuttle noise last year. Or maybe I'll just time it right again and hope the breaks between songs are when the shuttle shows up. I'm also working at the Goldenrod booth again this year. Look for the big pink booth on the right, about halfway back, as you come in the main crafts entrance. I'm in back of the booth, in the area where you can listen to demo CDs. I'd love to introduce you to some new music. There's a chance I might be bellydancing at the festival - possibly at the Sunday night concert at the acoustic stage. Please request me on your evaluation forms. I'd love to get booked to play on stage at Michigan! Even if you're not going to the festival, you can drop them a line and request that they book me. September - May their address is Box 7430, Berkeley, CA, 94707. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Tour, Tour, Tour ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ As always, check with the venue before heading out to a show. 8/8 - 8/13 Hart, MI, Michigan Womyns Music Festival, presenting workshops and performing at the Triangle Campfire Monday 8 pm and Friday after night stage ends, www.michfest.com 8/18 Decatur, GA, 9:30 pm, Eddie's Attic, with Carla Ulbrich and Bob Malone, www.eddiesattic.com, 404-377-4976 8/19 Columbia, SC, 8 pm, MCC, 1111 Bellview St., with Elaine Townsend, 803-256-2154 9/9 Columbus, OH, Ohio Lesbian Festival, 614-267-3953 9/11 Cary, NC, songwriting class begins at Page-Walker 9/12 Durham, NC, songwriting class begins at Duke 9/15 Cary, NC, 8 pm, Borders, 1751 Walnut St., 919-469-0708 9/16 Fuquay-Varina, NC, 8:30 pm, Hyphen Coffeehouse, 135 S.
