From: TsunamiInc@aol.com Subject: The Jamie Anderson Newsletter It's time for another edition of the Jamie Anderson newsletter! You are on this list because you signed my mailing list at a concert or wrote to me and asked to be added. If you'd like to be deleted or if your address will change soon, please let us know at tsunamiinc@aol.com. Please don't forward jokes, virus warnings or petitions. I love personal notes from fans, though, and try to answer every email. Feel free to forward this newsletter to your friends, especially if I'm going to be performing in their area. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Table of Contents ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 1. Welcome and General Blabbing 2. Rockrgrl Article - I get to say "old fart" in an internationally known magazine 3. October New Hope, PA performance 4. Want me in your living room?! 5. Classes start in September 6. Women's Week!!!!! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Welcome and General Blabbing ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Howdy everyone! August has been good. In the early part of the month, I was at the Michigan Women's Music Festival. Thanks to everyone who came out for my triangle fire concerts. I would've gladly played longer but it's a community campfire and I didn't want to hog the space. Maybe next year I'll be on a real stage! You can help by mentioning me on your evaluation forms. Write it in really big letters and promise them chocolate if they book me. Heck, I'll give them my first born child. I don't have any plans to have kids but does it matter? Even if you weren't at the festival, you can drop them a line and request that they book me. (September - May their address is Box 7430, Berkeley, CA, 94707.) It really does make a difference. Anne Feeney sang her great tune "Have You Gone to Jail For Justice" at the Friday campfire. If you'd like more information on her work, she can be reached at unionmaid@earthlink.net. I had a blast teaching the workshops ("How to Write and Perform a Funny Song" and "Bellydance for Beginners") and got to bellydance twice on stage -- once with my students and Ubaka Hill's Drumsong Orchestra (150 drums -- YEOWW!!) and again that night at the Sunday Evening Candlelight Concert. There I was, seated between Barbara Higbie and Rhiannon, hoping my heart wasn't beating loud enough to disrupt the beautiful performances. I also had a wonderful time at my gigs in Decatur and Columbia in mid-August. Gracias to everyone who came to both performances but I'm wondering what happened with the turnout at the Georgia gig. While I really appreciated the folks who came, we expected a larger audience since I played to many more in January. AND two other musicians, the fabulous and funny Carla Ulbrich (carlau@mindspring.com) and demon piano guy Bob Malone, were on the bill. Did the gig start too late? (I admit that 9:30 pm was a little late for even me.) Do you not like Eddie's Attic? Were there other big events that night that conflicted? Did I suck last time? (KIDDING - if you answer that, it must be accompanied by much imported dark chocolate.) Let me know and I'll do things differently next time. At any rate, we all had a good time. Carla sang her new f**k song. Damn funny. And even after spending almost all day on the interstate, Bob put in a fine piano pounding performance. Dang, if the guy had that much energy after being stuck in a traffic jam all day, I'd like to see how he is after a nap. In Columbia, I had the pleasure of performing with Elaine Townsend. Wow, wow, wow. Whether she's ripping out a blistering blues guitar riff or performing a heartfelt love song, she does it well. I heard some rough cuts from her new album "Redemption" and folks, you don't want to be without it. For more info, you can reach Elaine at elaine.townsend@mindspring.com. I'm really looking forward to September gigs in Ohio, North Carolina, and Delaware. There's a tour schedule at the end of this newsletter and at my website. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Rockrgrl Article - I get to say "old fart" in an internationally known magazine ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ In the July/August issue of Rockrgrl ("no beauty tips or guilt trips") is "Women's Music: The Evolution of a Revolution," an interview with Cris Williamson, Tret Fure, Holly Near and myself about the impact of women's music. Holly Figueroa, the founder of Indiegrrl (www.indiegrrl.com) wrote the article. It's so nice to see an article like this in a magazine devoted to rock, and one that probably a lot of younger women read, that honors women's music. (That reminds me of the gracious words Toshi Reagon said about the founders of women's music during her set at the Michigan festival, then did this killer version of Holly Near's "Fight Back.") As you can probably figure out from the title, Rockrgrl features articles about women and rock, with an emphasis on independent artists. Also in the issue I'm in is a great article about Michelle Malone and a kick butt editorial from publisher Carla A. DeSantis about Eminem. You may still be able to get this issue of Rockrgrl on newstands or from their website, http://www.rockrgrl.com. If you want to write and thank them for the article, their address is info@rockrgrl.com. Oh and the quote? I said, "A lot of women think that women's music is old fart music, limited to white folk singers whining about the patriarchy. It's so much more!" Yep, that's me, letting people all over the world know that "old fart" is in my vocabulary. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ October New Hope, PA performance ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I'm performing at Odette's in New Hope on October 25 at 8 pm. What's different about this gig is that you have to make and pay for reservations ahead of time. While there may be tickets at the door, I wouldn't wait. If there aren't enough paid reservations by the day of the concert, the show is canceled. There's also a food and drink minimum to meet. (Sorry about all the extra costs but it's their policy to do shows this way.) I've heard it's a great place -- think of it as a nice evening out. To make reservations, call 215-862-3000. For more information, you can visit this website: www.bobeganentertainment.com and click on the cabaret link. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Want me in your living room? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I'm looking to fill a few dates on my upcoming October tour. If you have a spacious living room or other space and you think you can get at least 20 friends to come and pay a little at the door, I'm there, babe. I've worked with a lot of first-time producers so I can help you with guidelines. Here's what I've got free: October 6, VA, MD, NY, PA October 8, NY, CT, MA October 9, 10, MA, CT, RI October 22 - 24, NY, PA October 26, PA I've got a couple of tentative bookings on a couple of those dates but in case they fall through, I'd like some back up. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Classes start in September! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I'm teaching songwriting in Durham at Duke and in Cary at Page-Walker. I'm also presenting a workshop "Getting Gigs" in Carrborro at The ArtsCenter. The world didn't end, my career didn't come to a complete halt, I didn't get ridiculed, I didn't get yelled at. Life went on just as I'd hoped it would. I hope that is the thing that I can sort of give to people. Nothing went wrong, it's all going pretty darned well. I think that's the day that we're all kind of struggling toward; the day that will be the case for everyone, when everyone will be able to be out and who they are and no one will care … and life will just carry on." -- Actor Bill Brochtrup of TV's "NYPD Blue," to Portland, Oregon's Just Out, April 7 May your day be normal.
