Delivered-To: mbaya@svaha.com From: TsunamiInc@aol.com Date: Thu, 17 May 2001 14:13:30 EDT Subject: The Jamie Anderson Newsletter To: DakotaAZ@aol.com Here's another edition of the average but somewhat amusing Jamie Anderson newsletter! You are on this list because you signed my mailing list at a concert or wrote to me and asked to be added. If you'd like to be deleted or if your address will change soon, please let us know at tsunamiinc@aol.com. Be kind and keep in mind that a real, feeling person answers your email. Please don't forward jokes, news items, virus warnings or petitions. I love personal notes from fans, though, and try to answer every email. Feel free to forward this newsletter to your friends, especially if I'm going to be performing in their area. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Table of Contents ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 1. General gum flapping, er, finger tapping 2. Camp Pleiades 3. Viva La Venus 4. The National Women's Music Festival 5. Tour, tour, tour 6. The ending quote ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 1. General gum flapping, er, finger tapping ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I'm late with this newsletter - usually I send them around the first of the month but since I was dragging my butt all over the midwest about then, I didn't get it done. I'm going to get back on track with the next edition so don't be surprised when you get another newsletter in just a couple of weeks. In late March, I taught and performed at Women Making Music (aka WoMaMu) in California. Yeehaw! It was like Girl Scout camp, only for adults. For women looking for an empowering, fun experience that's centered around music, I highly recommend these camps. WoMaMu@aol.com, www.judyfjell.com Some of you on my latest tour heard the story about how my girlfriend and I acquired our puppy (our "sucker light" was on the night the neighbor came by with the cute stray). Well, apparently I have a sucker light on in my truck too because I found a stray cat at a rest area in Missouri on my way home from my last tour. The rest area workers were feeding her but none could take her home. I called my sweetie who told me we had room for another feline. Actually it'll be more like six additional cats because this gray tortie is pregnant. The vet says she's due any day. One more thing - I found her May 13th. As I was getting into the car with her, one of the rest area workers said "Happy Mother's Day." There's a song in there somewhere. Kittens anyone? The tour was fab!!! I played all over the midwest, from Cincinnati to the wilds of Morris, Minnesota. Thanks for coming out to the shows! It was a great pleasure to share the bill with Laura Berkson in Des Moines (LBerkson@aol.com) and Random Access in St. Louis (their CD liner notes say randomaccess@earthling.net but I wonder if that should be randomaccess@earthlink.net?). Both are fabulous acts. If you like clear soprano vocals and thoughtful, solid songwriting, check out Laura's work. And Random Access is just about the best mostly a cappella jazz / folk / pop / gospel / rock / madrigal / spiritual dectet (whew!) that I've ever heard. And what to say about Kara Barnard? For those of you who had a chance to hear her open some of my shows and accompany me too, you heard some of the finest pickin' ever. I swear I saw her eyes roll into the back of her head when she was doing those fast guitar licks on "Whiskey for Breakfast." She's an amazing multi-instrumentalist whose latest release "Fret Hopping in Brown County" features her on a bazillion acoustic instruments - I highly recommend it. For more info: kbarn@sprynet.com. For the rest of May, I'm doing a gig close to home (Carrboro this Saturday with Tret Fure!) and at CampOut, a new women's festival in Virginia. I'm also teaching a workshop in Durham. June will find me in Oregon with Jubilate, the West Indies with the Olivia gals and at the National Women's Music Festival. See the tour schedule below for more information. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 2. Camp Pleiades ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ This is a wonderful resort for women located in the mountains north of Asheville, North Carolina. They have special events April through September - everything from canoe trips to music festivals. You can also rent their cozy cabins when they aren't having an event. The area is beautiful, the camp owners charming and the food is awesome. Heck, come for the food and consider the rest a bonus. I'm playing there Fourth of July week, in a fun adventure that includes live music and comedy, workshops (bellydance anyone?), rafting, horseback riding, and much more. 888-324-3110, www.starcamp.com, starcamp@aol.com. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 3. Viva La Venus ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ If you like bands like The Breeders and the Butchies, check out Viva La Venus, www.vivalavenus.com. They play a lot around the triangle cities area in North Carolina. Their cute drummer is my girlfriend, BTW. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 4. The National Women's Music Festival ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Earlier this year, this festival was asking for help in getting out of enormous debt. I don't know if that's still an issue but even if it isn't, it's worth it to support this awesome festival. Many of you who came to my midwest gigs live very close to this event and hey, what's a few hours drive? If you're low on bucks, consider working at the festival or just going for one day. It's an indoor festival so you can sleep on real beds and hear concerts in a beautiful concert hall. This year's event features Holly Near and Cris Williamson (together!), Vickie Shaw, as well as a couple of my favorites, Kara Barnard and Wishing Chair, and many more. Yours truly will be emceeing and teaching workshops. Oh, and don't forget the festival chorus (anyone can join!), open mic, crafts area, a dance, sports events and so much more! 317-927-9355, wia@wiaonline.org, www.wiaonline.org. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 5.
