You are getting this because you signed my mailing list at a concert or wrote to me and asked to be added. If you'd like to be deleted or if your address will change soon, please let us know at tsunamiinc@aol.com. Be kind and keep in mind that a real, feeling person answers your email. Please don't forward jokes, news items, virus warnings or petitions. I love personal notes from fans, though, and try to answer every email. Feel free to forward this newsletter to your friends, especially if I'm going to be performing in their area. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Table of Contents ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 1. General stuff 2. General stuff ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I had some great gigs this past month, starting at Camp Pleiades in the mountains near Asheville and ending at the Common Grounds Women's Music Festival in Ithaca, NY. In between I played at the Six String Cafˇ in Cary, NC, in a benefit for Kathy Leahan, a local woman who is battling cancer. I hear they raised a good amount of money but I'm sure they could use more. Contact Laura Landsiedel at laural@intrex.net for information. I love Camp Pleiades. It's such a beautiful place and Barbara and Jacque, wonderful hosts. (Hostesses? I dunno, that word always conjures up Donna Reed in a pink apron and neither woman fits the bill.) I had a great time leading a sing-along around the campfire, bellydancing and doing a concert one night in the lodge. Somewhere in there I got to stretch out in a hammock with my sweetie, go horseback riding and risk life and limb in a rubber kyack in the rapids of the French Broad River. Actually, it was damn fun, just like a roller coaster, only there's no track. And you can drown. Small details. I did a lot of screaming. And what can I say about the festival in Ithaca? Fabulous, dahlings, simply fabulous. The day was sunny and gorgeous, the music fine (I especially enjoyed folksinger Erica Wheeler and jazz band The Nines) and the crowd friendly and attentive. Common Ground isn't your usual gay bar, for sure, and I encourage anyone traveling through to visit. They feature live music on a regular basis, the staff is friendly and the food, good. And if you live there, consider yourselves truly lucky and support this great place often. In August, I'll be at the Michigan Women's Music Festival ON STAGE! (Not that I'm excited or anything.) AND I'll be recording my new album in Durham after that, another damn exciting thing. More about both later. In September and October, I'll be on the east coast. See the tour schedule at the end for more info. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 2. The Michigan Women's Music Festival ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I'll be in the round robin on the Thursday day stage!! Please attend to cheer me on. I'd really like a regular booking at this festival and if they see lots of enthusiasm for me at the round robin, it would certainly help. Also look for me to do a song at the Sunday Candlelight concert. (I'll probably do "A Family of Friends" - what do you think?) I'll most likely squeeze in one or two triangle fire concerts too so keep an eye out for flyers in the porta janes. (Only the BEST advertising for me.) I'm also teaching a bunch of workshops, some of them half day intensives, on songwriting and bellydance. And if you don't catch me there, I'll be working in the Goldenrod booth in the crafts area (that big pink structure toward the back) probably Thursday through Sunday afternoon. I'm in the listening booth where I can recommend CDs for you to try out. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 3. Want to go to song camp?! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Judy Fjell organizes this wonderful event on the west coast called WoMaMu (Women Making Music). It's a music empowerment weekend for women that includes lots of singing, playing instruments, improv and general fun. It's just like Girl Scout Camp only you don't have to do the dishes or know how to tie a square knot. I had the pleasure of teaching there last March and had a blast. When I called Judy to suggest that she do one on my end of the country, she said "I think you should do it." I know when to take good advice when I hear it, especially since Judy's offered to help me with the first few, so I'm looking seriously into it. In North Carolina I've found what I think will be a great place to have it. I'll shoot for a holiday weekend next summer but it may be sometime else in the summer, over a weekend. I'd need at least 20 women to come but the camp has room for 100. You don't have to give me a definite answer right now, but contact me if you think you'd be interested in something like this. Keep in mind that this would not be a camp for professional musicians, just a place to have fun making music with other women. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 4. More about Listen ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Plans for Listen are coming along fine. The photos are taken, I've met with a graphic designer and charts are out to the musicians. Fundraising is going well but I might need a few more dollars. If you think you can help me out, cut and paste the order form below and send it in with a check. I am sooooo excited about this project!! Kara Barnard, my co-producer, and I have lots of great ideas for my songs. Here's what's gonna be on it: Listen, Forever Family, I Miss the Dog, Maybe You Miss Me, A Family of Friends, Much Better View of the Moon, Potato Chips, Fourteen, Love This True, Three Bridges, Invitation, Her Problem Now My sincere thanks to everyone who's lending me money and given me gifts to pay for this album. One of my investors said she's using her tax rebate. She figures she'd use it "for a worthwhile endeavor near and dear to the hearts of George W. and The GOP: lesbian music." Listen will be out in November or December, goddess willin' and the crik don't rise. ******* Help make "Listen" a reality! Frog Haven Women's Bed and Breakfast ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I stayed at this great place when I was in Ithaca. The innkeepers are friendly, the food wonderful and the place is on several acres of beautiful rural land. There's a big pond for swimming (and frogs!) as well as near by hiking. FrogHavenBB@aol.com, www.froghavenwomensbedandbreakfast.com ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 6. Want me in your living room?! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I'm looking for house concert opportunities in the following places and for the following dates. A few of these dates are penciled in for other folks but in case they can't do it, I'd like something else waiting: 9/21 CT 9/23 - 27 CT, MA, VT, NH, RI 10/1 - 5 New England 10/8, 9 MA, NY 10/14 NY (near NYC - Long Island? NJ?) 10/15 - 17 NY 1022 - 24 PA, MD, If you have a room that fits 20 or more and an address book of friends who'd attend, we can set something up. A house concert is easy. We agree on a date, you contact your friends, then I show up to do a concert. It's like giving a party only there's live music. For a good overview of house concerts, see www.darrylpurpose.com/etc/house.htm ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 7. This Way Out benefit in Los Angeles ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ This Way Out is a great lgbt radio show that's heard all over the world. Unfortunately, they're in serious financial trouble and need to raise money quickly to stay on the air. If you live in the LA area, you can help by attending "Legendary Bingo" on Thursday, August 16, 2001 at 8 pm at Dupars in Weho, 8571 Santa Monica Blvd., at the Ramada Inn in West Hollywood, 310-659-7009. Legendary Bingo always has celebrity hosts and in the past that's included Dan Butler ("Frasier), Estelle Getty ("The Golden Girls"), Ruth Buzzi, Linda Blair, Kelly Martin ("E.R."), and Jennifer Elise Cox-who called each game as "Jan Brady." $15 at the door will get you ten bingo games and one grand prize game. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 8. Looking for the gay community in Ellsworth, ME ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Some nice straight folks are producing a house concert for me but they aren't sure how to reach the lgbt community. If you know of a publication, website or other resource I can give to them, please let me know (tsunaminc@aol.com). If you have any friends in the area, let 'em know about the show.
