Subject: The Jamie Anderson Newsletter Date: Thursday, January 31, 2002 11:44 AM From: TsunamiInc@aol.com To: Here's another edition of the somewhat literate but occasionally awkward Jamie Anderson newsletter! You are getting this because you signed my mailing list at a concert or wrote to me and asked to be added. If you'd like to be deleted or if your address will change soon, please let us know at tsunamiinc@aol.com. Be kind and keep in mind that a real, feeling person answers your email. Please don't forward jokes, news items, virus warnings or petitions. I love personal notes from fans, though, and try to answer every email. Feel free to forward this newsletter to your friends, especially if I'm going to be performing in their area. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Table of Contents ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 1. Opening message 2. Opening Message ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ January has found me mostly at home, booking tours, playing the guitar and doing publicity for my new album Listen. My hard work is paying off - recently there's been press about Listen in the Windy City Times (Chicago), Gay and Lesbian Times (Southern CA), Family and Friends (Memphis), as well as some great local press for my upcoming album release concert in Carrboro, NC: an interview in the Durham Herald-Sun, and mention in the Independent and Spectator, our two alternative newsweeklies. The review in the Memphis paper was so nice, I've included it below. Several radio shows have played Listen including Car Talk and This Way Out (more info below). I traveled to Kentucky in mid January to help Wishing Chair with their new album. Folks, this CD is going to be awesome, featuring wonderfully written songs that lean toward traditional folk. Well, there's also that pop love song that I wake up humming most mornings and that hip-hop-folk number too. Great musicianship by Kara Barnard, Kiya Heartwood, Miriam Davidson and others. You gotta hear this album and I'm not saying this 'cause I'm on it. www.terrakin.com. Last weekend I attended the People's Music Network gathering in Asheville. More about that below. I'm really excited about my songwriting class and Getting Gigs class that'll happen in Durham in February. For more info: www.learnmore.duke.edu/shortcourse. These fun classes are open to the community, not just Duke students. All levels of musicianship are welcome, even if you don't read music. I twisted my ankle a few days ago, turning it and my foot a splendid color of deep violet and pale green. It's healing but damn has it interfered with my daily walks. Yoga is out too. Send chocolate. My album release concert is this Saturday, February 2 (more below) and I'll start touring near the end of February, starting with the NW and moving on to CA. April will find me in the midwest. See the tour schedule below for more information. Hope to see you at a show!! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 2. Album release concert this Saturday!!! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I am so excited about this show I can barely contain myself. It'll be at the Arts Center in Carrboro, NC, 300 E. Main, 8 pm, this Saturday, February 2. (Some publicity says 7:30 pm but that's wrong.) What's really cool is that I'll have a band for a few numbers: Leigh Peterson on drums, Mary Anne Barkhoff on bass and Wendy Brancaccio on vocals. They're all members of Viva la Venus, a great local band (www.vivalavenus.com). There'll also be bellydancing by Eternal Oasis, a baton twirling contest - you can suck and still win - and door prizes for everyone! This is not just a concert, it's a party. You gotta come! 919-929-2787 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 3. Still in need of house concerts in northern CA ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I've still got a few holes in my upcoming west coast tour. If you have a living room or other space that seats at least 20, I'd love to talk to you. Here's what I need: March 9 Arcata / Eureka / Chico / Redding / ? March 10 - 12 San Francisco area / Santa Rosa / Sacramento For an overview of what a house concert is: www.darrylpurpose.com/etc/house.htm ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 4. This Way Out ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I was recently on This Way Out. You can hear it at http://www.planetout.com/radio/programs/two/. On the air since April 1988, "This Way Out" is a multi-award-winning internationally-distributed weekly gay and lesbian radio newsmagazine. It currently airs on over 125 community radio stations around the world. For lots of other information about "This Way Out" (including audiocassette subscription information), visit their Web page at http://www.thiswayout.org, email TWOradio@aol.com, or write to P.O. Box 38327, Los Angeles, CA 90038-0327. ~~~~~~~~~~~ 5. CarTalk ~~~~~~~~~~~ The guys with good taste at CarTalk played "I Wanna Drive" on show number 203, airing in most markets on January 19. It's the third time they've given me airplay (one song from each of my last three albums) so I've decided to put a car or driving tune on every CD. Hey, it's not every day a gal gets national airplay. I excitedly told a couple of friends right after I found out and was greeted with, "What's CarTalk?" Yes, it's true, I actually know people who don't listen to public radio. One friend thought I was featured as some sort of car expert on a car advice show. Um, no É it's an advice show about autos, yes, but it's very entertaining even if you don't know a spark plug from an ashtray. For more info about CarTalk, visit www.cartalk.com. Click on "Our Lousy Radio Show," then "Music on the Show," then "Auto tunes that change every week." You'll see my song listed there. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 6. I'm a union gal now ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I've joined AFM Local 1000. For the first time in my life, I have disability insurance, a pension, and other great benefits. If you or someone you know is a musician who plays most gigs away from your/their home town, I strongly recommend joining. www.local1000.com ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 7. Be a part of my street team and get a free CD ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I could still use some assistance in getting the word out about my new album Listen. Email information about my music to a few friends, post on a website or two, plus request me for some big events and you'll get a free Jamie Anderson CD of your choice. It's easy to do - you'll get complete instructions including contact information - and it won't take much time out of your day. Write: tsunamiinc@aol.com ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 8. Outvoice - please vote for Listen ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Please vote for Listen! www.outvoice.com Listen has been in the top 10 for the last several weeks and you helped me get to the number one spot twice in December. Please help me do it again! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 9. Request Listen for the Dr. Demento show ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ This is a nationally syndicated radio show aired in many cities, the same one that helped launch Weird Al Yankovic's career. Since there are two funny songs on Listen ("Potato Chips" and "I Miss the Dog"), it's possible he'll give me airplay. It might help to get a nudge from my fans: www.demento.com - click on the request button. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 10. Other Jamie Andersons ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ In the last month I've had two inquires about "my" album "Blue Music." I don't have an album of that title - it's by another musician named Jamie Anderson but there's a website that lists it as one of my releases. Actually, there are three musicians named Jamie Anderson that I am aware of, all of them men: a sax player, an electronic artist and a cabaret singer. Several years ago the cabaret singer and I were both trying to book ourselves at the same LA club, greatly confusing the booker. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 11. Family and Friends review ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Family and Friends Memphis, TN January 2002 In the Mix by Cole Walker Jamie Anderson - Listen Inevitably something magical happens when you put a guitar in the hands of a lesbian; that something is usually great folk music. Okay, so that is a stereotype, but in Jamie Anderson's case it is very true. On Listen, the veteran folkie shines. Anderson possesses a wonderfully wacky sense of humor that sprinkles itself throughout the record. Her press release lists her as a singer / songwriter /parking lot attendant, the last because her mother always told her to have a career to fall back on. Emotionally, this album runs the gambit, from sad to happy to downright silly. The silliest has to be "Potato Chips," on which Anderson sings about her longing for potato chips in such a passionate way that one can't help but wonder what potato chips could possibly be a metaphor for. The tear-jerker of the album has to be "Fourteen," a song, based on a true story, in which Anderson sings about a 14 year old boy who is shot and lies dying. It is an impassioned cry for gun control. "Fourteen" isn't the only track with a political point. "A Love This True" cries out for the right of gay and lesbian couples to marry: "We love each other / we want the right to have more than margaritas on our wedding night." On "Forever Family" Anderson tackles the issue of same-sex couples raising children. "But they got their baby boy / put him on the MasterCard." On "I Miss the Dog," she explains to an ex-lover that while she doesn't miss her, she does miss the dog they shared. My personal favorite has to be "Much Better View of the Moon," on which Anderson offers all kinds of optimistic advice: "If the news is bad / I'll watch cartoons." In the age of substanceless pop and angry rap-rock, folk doesn't get much attention, but with songs that combine engaging lyrics with equally engaging music, Anderson will surely be making music for years to come. The album is called Listen and that's exactly what you should do. Highlights include, "Fourteen," "Forever Family," "A Love This True," and "Much Better View of the Moon" ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 12. People's Music Network ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ This is an organization of people who use music and other art to promote progressive ideas. They have two gatherings per year and last weekend in Asheville, NC was the first one I was able to attend. The weekend started with a Friday night concert that featured Peggy Seeger, Si Kahn, and others. On Saturday and Sunday were workshops and song circles. I loved making connections with people like Bernice Silver, a lively puppeteer in her 80's. I found the event disorganized and the concert way too long but they tell me that every gathering has it's own flavor, most of them more organized than this one. If you have any interest in songs and art about social justice, I strongly recommend going to a gathering. They are wonderful folks doing important work. There's a strong lesbian presence there too, which I liked a lot. www.peoplesmusic.org ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 13. Requests ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ As I've said before, my memory bites. If you request a song at a show that's more than five years old, chances are pretty good I won't remember it. However, if you request a song ahead of time, I might have time to rehearse it and do it at the show you plan to attend. Just send me an email: tsunamiinc@aol.com. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 14. Tour, tour, tour ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ As always, check with the venue before heading out to a show or class. 2/2 Carborro, NC, 8 pm, ArtsCenter, 300 E Main, 919-929-2787, www.artscenterlive.org, album release concert with special guests 2/10 Durham, NC, Songwriting class begins at Duke, www.learnmore.duke.edu 2/11 Tucson, AZ, evening, phone interview on KXCI 91.3 FM, with Susie B, 520-623-1000 2/19 Durham, NC, Getting Gigs workshop at Duke 2/23 Olympia, WA, 8 pm, Traditions CafŽ, 300 5th Ave. SW, 360-705-2819 2/24 Renton, WA, 4 pm, house concert, limited space - contact for directions and RSVP, ripley32@yahoo.com, 425-687-7346 2/28 Portland, OR, 7 pm, Touchstone Coffeehouse, 7631 NE Glisan, 503-262-7613, www.touchstonecoffeehouse.com 3/1 Seattle, WA, 8 pm, house concert, limited parking - contact for directions and RSVP, faylas@earthlink.net, 206-523-6723, no alcohol or smoking please 3/2 Eugene, OR, 8:30 pm, Paradiso CafŽ, 115 W Broadway, 541-485-3088 3/3 Newport, OR, 6:30 pm, house concert, otterweiler@hotmail.com, 541-574-4493 3/7 Corvallis, OR, 8 pm, Oregon State University, Memorial Union Lounge, Womens.Center@mu.orst.edu, 541-737-1330 3/8 Roseberg, OR, 5:30 potluck, 7:30 show, house concert, 541-679-4655, danajem@internetcds.com 3/13 Concord, CA, 7 pm, Concord Rainbow Center, 2118 Willow Pass Rd., Ste. 500, 925-692-0090, ajwolff@hotmail.com 3/15 Berkeley, CA, 8 pm, Rose Street House of Music 510-594-4000 x 687, rosestreetmusic@yahoo.com, with Wishing Chair 3/16 Santa Cruz, CA, 8 pm, Cayuga Vault, 1100 Soquel Ave., www.cayugavault.com 3/18 Davis, CA, 7 pm, Davis Library Community Room, 530-756-2541, JoplinLC@aol.com 3/21 Oakland, CA, Montclair Women's Club, featured performer at open mike, with Alix Dobkin 3/22-24 Healdsburg, CA, Women Making Music, WoMaMu@aol.com 3/29 San Diego, CA, 8 pm, Java Joes, 1956 Bacon St. 619-523-0356, http://javajoes.org, with Mary Dolan 3/30 San Bernardino, CA, 7 pm, San Bernardino Valley College, Liberal Arts 100, 909-888-6511 x 1510 3/31 Long Beach, CA, 5:30 potluck, 7 pm show, house concert, Jclewe@aol.com, 562-439-1337 4/6 Ft.
