Subject: The Jamie Anderson Newsletter Date: Wednesday, April 3, 2002 5:06 PM From: TsunamiInc@aol.com To: Cc: Here's another edition of the Jamie Anderson newsletter! You are getting this because you signed my mailing list at a concert or wrote to me and asked to be added. If you'd like to be deleted or if your address will change soon, please let us know at tsunamiinc@aol.com. Be kind and keep in mind that a real, feeling person answers your email. Please don't forward jokes, news items, virus warnings or petitions. I love personal notes from fans, though, and try to answer every email. Feel free to forward this newsletter to your friends, especially if I'm going to be performing in their area. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Table of Contents ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 1. General blabbing 2. Tour, tour, tour 10. Closing quote ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 1. General blabbing ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I came home from my west coast tour Monday night to find my home of Durham, NC, in the riotous colors of spring. The dogwoods are dressed in bright pink and white. Azaleas are in bloom as are a lot of other plants this desert girl can't identify. (I can tell a saguaro from a prickly pear but don't ask me what all this brilliant green stuff is. I just know it's pretty.) Thanks to all who came to my west coast shows. I especially appreciate those of you who gave me a place to stay, produced my concerts and told their friends about the shows. If it weren't for all of you, I wouldn't be able to do this job I love. I certainly had a blast at Women Making Music (WoMaMu), a music camp for women that's run by Judy Fjell and a host of talented staff. It's like no other place where I've taught - these women are fearless! And so much fun. For photos and other information about this year's camp, check out www.windchimewalker.com/journal.html. Click on the journal entries for March 25 and March 26. You'll see a few pictures of moi playing music and teaching bellydance, as well as the happy women who attended. If you're a woman who lives on the west coast, I highly recommend Judy's camps. If you live east of the Mississippi (and even if you don't), come to Women in Harmony! It's based on WoMaMu. Judy is one of the teachers as well as Elaine Townsend and myself. There's more information below. I've gotta admit to you that while most of my tour was great, there were a couple times when I played to several small crowds in a row. I can weather a small audience, even two, and enjoy the shows but too many in a row and I start to wonder why I'm doing this work. I certainly do appreciate the folks who come to shows but I can't emphasize enough how important it is for you to tell your friends about my performances. My promotional budget is so tiny, I can't afford to advertise much, so you are my promotional staff. Thanks to everyone who forwards my tour schedule to others, plays my CDs for their friends and who show up at the concerts. You are the best fans on the planet. I'll be on tour in the midwest next, with my first gig in Ft. Wayne this Saturday. I'll also be elsewhere in Indiana, Ohio, Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota and Kentucky. I'm really excited about artists I'm sharing a bill with: Kara Barnard, Wishing Chair and Cosy Sheridan. I can say honestly that I'm a big fan of all three. I'm also playing at some festivals this summer including CampOut in Virginia, the National Women's Festival in Indiana and I'm teaching workshops at the Michigan Women's Music Festival. More details are below. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 2. Women in Harmony ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I am one of the organizers for this great new music camp for women. It's a fun and supportive retreat for women of all musical abilities. Women In Harmony will be held July 26 - 28 at beautiful Camp Pleiades in the mountains near Asheville, NC. (www.starcamp.com) There'll be workshops (songwriting, guitar, improv, singing, dance), song circles and jam sessions for beginners through intermediate players and singers. The event is based on Judy Fjell's successful west coast camp Women Making Music (WoMaMu). For more information and to register, contact Women In Harmony, c/o Elaine Townsend, PO Box 973, Columbia, SC, 29202, elainetownsendsc@yahoo.com, 803-791-7606 or check www.jamieanderson.com or www.judyfjell.com. A $50 deposit holds your place. Registration is $225 to $300 sliding scale if paid by June 28. This fee includes delicious meals, all activities, cabin accommodations or tent space, and full use of the beautiful grounds including a swimming pond, hiking trails, and hammocks. Whether you're a shower singer or a professional musician, we hope you can join us! ~~~~~~~~~~~~ 3. Requests ~~~~~~~~~~~~ If you email me a song request ahead of time (tsunamiinc@aol.com) and tell me what show you'll be attending, I'll do my best to rehearse the song and do it at that performance. I'm happy to take requests at shows too but my memory bites. Thanks to the women at the Renton show who helped me remember "I'm Sorry." Every time I'd forget a word, I'd look at them and read their lips. That happened a couple of years ago with the same song at a gig in Ithaca only then, it was most of the audience who seemed to know the words. Maybe I need to start taking Ginkgo. Or including "I'm Sorry" as a regular part of my show. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 4. Southern Belles Raising Hell ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ This is a an exciting compilation CD that will benefit Ladyfest South, a festival featuring women performers from all over the south. They're including my song "(I Wanna) Drive" as well as cuts from Michelle Malone, Danielle Howle, Tami Hart, The Butchies, Doria Roberts, Angela Motter, Alix Olson and many more! You can get it now at www.cdbaby.com/southernbelles. I'll also have it at my shows. Proceeds go toward producing the festival in October and will be donated to a worthwhile organization after that. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 5. Want me in your living room? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I am still without a gig for Friday, April 12. If you have a living room or other space that'll seat 20 people or more and you think you can get a crowd with little notice, I'd love to talk with you. Northern Illinois or southern Wisconsin is best. (Although I already have a gig in Chicago, I'd schedule a second one there since it's such a big city and my other gig is women only.) I might also have an opening for April 19. Although I have a tentative show scheduled and it looks pretty good to do it, I want to have a back up. You'd need to be in Ohio or Indiana. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 6. Beach House B&B in Newport, OR ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ If you're looking for a fabulous vacation spot on the beach in Oregon, look no further than the Beach House B&B. I had the privilege of staying there in February and really enjoyed it. All of the beautifully decorated rooms have a TV with VCR, jacuzzi tub, microwave and lots of other great stuff. They're just two blocks from the beach and within walking distance of shops and places to eat. Don't worry about breakfast, though, because they offer a great breakfast there. www.beachhousebb.com, nward@beachhousebb.com Tell 'em I sent you. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 7. Global Village School ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ If you or someone you know is home schooling children, you might want to know about these folks. They offer instructional materials and on line schooling that includes peace and social justice issues. I did a benefit for them in Ojai, CA. www.globalvillageschool.org. ~~~~~~~~~~~ 8. Queer TV ~~~~~~~~~~~ Starting April 8, Nightline is going to be showing gay themed programs. They'll do it all week! And if that wasn't enough, fab lesbian comic Suzanne Westenhoefer is going to be on Politically Incorrect on Tuesday night. Ladies and gentlemen, start your VCRs! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 9. Tour, tour, tour (no, NOT toro toro toro) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ As always, check with the venue before heading out to a show. 4/6 Ft. 'Cause, see, I have to shine. I have to." Dolly Parton to US Weekly And I bet she'd be a dang good bellydancer, even in those four inch heels. (Someone asked her once why she wore four inch heels and she quipped, "Because I can't find five inch heels.")
