Subject: The Jamie Anderson Newsletter Date: Saturday, May 4, 2002 4:32 PM From: TsunamiInc@aol.com To: Cc: , Here's another edition of the somewhat boastful but always sincere Jamie Anderson newsletter! You are getting this because you signed my mailing list at a concert or wrote to me and asked to be added. If you'd like to be deleted or if your address will change soon, please let us know at tsunamiinc@aol.com. Be kind and keep in mind that a real, feeling person answers your email. Please don't forward jokes, news items, virus warnings or petitions. I love personal notes from fans, though, and try to answer every email. Feel free to forward this newsletter to your friends, especially if I'm going to be performing in their area. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Table of Contents ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 1. Closing quote ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 1. General flapping of the gums, er, tapping of the keys ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I'm back home after a lot of touring - about 5,000 miles on my truck, just in April. I'm ready to rest my weary butt and reacquaint myself with my family. I had a wonderful midwest tour. Thanks so much to everyone who came out. Can you all arrange for more stable weather next time? I went from spring in Indiana (with the temperature in the 70's), to a tornado watch in Kentucky, to snow in Minnesota. When I asked my St. Paul audience if this was spring, someone deadpanned, "No it's summer. Welcome to Minnesota." My Columbus, Indiana audience made me misbehave but at least they helped me raise additional money for Womyn to Womyn. Part of the proceeds from concert tickets and auction went to benefit breast cancer research and the W2W Education and Emergency Fund. One of the things they do is to help women who need quick funding because of health and other emergencies. If you want to contribute, you can reach them at lespam@juno.com. It was a fun show, too, performing with the incredible Kara Barnard. In spite of a very sprained wrist, she wowed everyone with a great opening set, then performing with me. (I tried to convince her not to play with me to save her wrist but would she listen to me? Sigh.) Speaking of great performers, I also had big fun with Wishing Chair in Bloomington, IN (also with Kara), Chicago and Lexington. I continue to be amazed at their wonderful songs and I can't wait to do another gig with them this month in Cary, NC. (More below.) You can find out more about them at www.terrakin.com. Check out their new CD, Crow. I held their cats hostage until they let me sing on a couple of songs. I also had an awesome gig with Cosy Sheridan in St. Paul. The folks in her audience already had a fine, I say FINE appreciation for funny tunes. When I sang "I Wanna Be A Straight Guy," no one looked sideways at me, even the straight guys. Cosy's new album is "Ant Hymn" and I like it a lot. It features fine guitar work, solid songs and great vocals. I'm especially fond of "Barbie." Here's a few of the lyrics: Dear Mattel, I am writing you this letter / I have some ideas on how to make Barbie better / So in this envelope I have enclosed a list / On how to make Barbie more like women who really exist / So let's make a Barbie who always has to pee / With a body succumbing to gravity / Let's give her some problems with water retention / And fantasies she will not mention Wanna hear more? www.cosysheridan.com I'm sticking closer to home for the month of May. I'll be at the Six String Cafˇ in Cary and at CampOut in Virginia. In June I'll be at the National Women's Music Festival and elsewhere. More below. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 2. Women in Harmony ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I am one of the organizers for this great new music camp for women. It's a fun and supportive retreat for women of all musical abilities. It's like Girl Scout camp only you can have sex at night. Women In Harmony will be held July 26 - 28 at beautiful Camp Pleiades in the mountains near Asheville, NC. (www.starcamp.com) There'll be workshops (songwriting, guitar, improv, singing, dance), song circles and jam sessions for beginners through intermediate players and singers. The event is based on Judy Fjell's successful west coast camp Women Making Music (WoMaMu). For more information and to register, contact Women In Harmony, c/o Elaine Townsend, PO Box 973, Columbia, SC, 29202, elainetownsendsc@yahoo.com, 803-791-7606 or check www.jamieanderson.com or www.judyfjell.com. A $50 deposit holds your place. Registration is $225 to $300 sliding scale if paid by June 28. This fee includes delicious meals, all activities, cabin accommodations or tent space, and full use of the beautiful grounds including a swimming pond, hiking trails, and hammocks. Whether you're a shower singer or a professional musician, we hope you can join us! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 3. Where to buy my recordings and other stuff ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ You can purchase my recordings on the net at www.goldenrod.com, www.ladyslipper.org, www.hrmusic.com and other sites. All have my recent releases while Goldenrod has more of my older recordings. All three sites have songs or sound clips you can listen to. If you want a bricks and mortar type of place, your best bet is to try gay bookstores, women's bookstores and independent music stores that carry folk music. You can also check chains like Borders or Tower. If ordering by phone is your thing, try Ladyslipper at 800-634-6044. Sorry, I don't sell my recordings direct except at shows or for special sales announced in the newsletter. The songwriting book and t-shirts are only available at shows or special sales. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 4. Outvoice has a new address, please vote for Listen ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ You can now find them at www.outvoice.net. Please set a bookmark there for this great lgbt music site and vote for Listen! My new album has been on the charts since November and with your help, it could stay there for a while. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 5. The National Women's Music Festival ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Girl howdy, do they have a great line-up this year: Margie Adam, Ember Swift, Bitch and Animal, Saphire (Uppity Blues Women), Laura Love, Wishing Chair, Michelle Malone, Vickie Shaw, Kara Barnard, Alix Olsen, moi, and many more. If that wasn't enough, they have a fine arts exhibit, theater presentations, workshops, a festival chorus, a crafts area, health fair, golf scramble, and open mike. You can sleep in real beds, eat great food, and see shows in wonderful theaters. There are lots of opportunities for performers, too, even if you aren't booked. Play at the open mike and you may be chosen for the Goddess Jam Coffeehouse. One performer from the coffeehouse will play the main stage on Sunday. Last year's festie-goer performer, Ruth King, is on the day stage this year. There's also a reader's theater that you can participate in, a jam/song circle, a festival chorus and a drum chorus. What are you waiting for? Even my mother is coming! It's June 7 - 9 in Muncie, IN. www.wiaonline.org, wia@wiaonline.org, 317-927-9355. ~~~~~~~~~~~~ 6. CampOut ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Here's another fun festival for y'all, this one in Virginia. It's Memorial Day weekend and features Tret Fure, Alix Dobkin, Deidre McCalla, Wishing Chair, Kara Barnard, CommonbonD, me and more. For you central/eastern North Carolina gals, keep in mind that this is only a 4 or 5 hour drive! It's about the same if you live in the DC area. www.campoutva.com, campoutva@campoutva.com, 804-783-6001. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 7. Whad 'ya Know ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ In April I had the great pleasure of attending a live broadcast of this very entertaining quiz show that's broadcast on public radio. Michael Feldman, the host, is funnier than Letterman or Leno. I thnk that even though I wasn't chosen for the quiz. Maybe I should've worn the bellydance costume. If you want to know more, check your local public radio station's schedule or www.notmuch.com. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 8. Independent music stores in your city ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Goldenrod is looking for new places to put my music and the CDs of other independent artists. Mom and pop (or mom and mom, whatever ) stores are great, especially if they already carry folk music. Most chains wouldn't be interested (unless it's Tower or Borders) and Goldenrod already knows about the gay and women's bookstores. If you can suggest a record store, let them know at grdist@aol.com. ~~~~~~~~~~ 9. Pit bulls ~~~~~~~~~~ Some of you have heard the story of how my gf and I got our sweet pit bull Shelby. For those who haven't -- a neighbor worked a few doors down from where our dog was born. The mama dog and her puppies were living outdoors, in all kinds of weather, usually without enough to eat. The neighbor often brought lunch to share with the dogs and tried to get better living conditions for them. When she couldn't, she bought two of the puppies, discovered they had parvo (a usually fatal disease), and spent lots of time and money on them. They survived but she couldn't keep them so she went around the neighborhood, asking if anyone could keep them. Our sucker light was on that night. We thought she was a boxer mix but found out a couple of days later that she was a pit bull. Like many other folks, I believed the terrible stories about pit bulls and was horrified to find I'd fallen in love with one. I've since found out much about this wonderful breed. It's true that they can sometimes be aggressive with other dogs but with good training and socialization, this isn't a problem. They have a sweet, loyal disposition -- so much so that some are used as therapy dogs while others are in rescue work. In tests tun by the American Temperment Test Society (they test dogs for stability, aggression and friendliness), pit bulls passed 82.3% of the time while Golden Retrievers tested an average of 81.9%. Pretty eye opening, eh? Many shelters won't take pit bulls and some routinely put them down without trying to find them a home. In reality, they are a resiliant breed and even if they've been viciously abused, can adapt to a new life in a loving home. If you're looking for a dog, I strongly recommend this breed, especially if you can adopt one from a rescue society. (www.pbrc.net/home.html or www.sets.com/btrescue/). Check also: www.forpitssake.org, click on "American Pit Bull Terrier." BTW, the same neighbor who rescued the two puppies paid to have the mama dog fixed so her owners would stop breeding her. This neighbor is a sweetheart, for sure, and still sees Shelby on a regular basis. We just got an invitation to a party at her house and Shelby's name was on it too. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 10.
