General blabbing ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Wow, what a month it's been. In early June I had the great pleasure to perform at the National Women's Music Festival. Wow, wow, wow. Not only did I have a great time on stage (with a BAND - the fabulous Kara Barnard, Kiya Heartwood, Miriam Davidson and Leigh Peterson) but I also met lots of great women and heard some wonderful music. What a variety - from the bluegrass of Kara Barnard to the folk-funk of Laura Love to Alix Olson's amazing poetry to Wishing Chair's folk n soul É I needed a clone to make it to every stage and event. In addition to my musical performance (where I got to pretend I was Bonnie Raitt - yes, that was me with an electric guitar), I emceed, bellydanced and embarrassed myself at the auction. It was all Vickie Shaw's fault. It turned into a contest of who could persuade a woman to bid the most for the Olivia cruise. Vickie is shameless and you can tell her I said so. At any rate, the festival raised over $21,000 at the auction so heck, if it means I have to throw my skirt over some woman's head, then I'll do it. And have I mentioned my mother was there? AND my girlfriend? AND my girlfriend's mom? Ah well -- it's not like my mother hasn't seen my bra before and heck, I WAS wearing leggings under that skirt so I'm not the big hussy that y'all think I am. Our mothers had a fabulous time. To be honest, I knew they would enjoy our set (my gf was in my band) but I wasn't sure how they'd like the rest of it. I shouldn't have worried. They lboth went on and on about the high quality of music. They bought CDs and got them signed, acting like giddy fans. They did stuff without us - can you imagine? - like going to the Goddess Jam Coffeehouse. To get a better idea of what the festival was like, check out Patricia Lay-Dorsey's great site: www.windchimewalker.com/NWMF2002/html. The festival site will also have something up soon: www.wiaonline.org. Don't miss this great festival next year! Oh and how could I forget - I was honored as Spotlight Artist of the Year and presented with a plaque on Saturday's mainstage. Next time, I'm wearing waterproof mascara. And if that wasn't enough, I arrived home to find that I'd won OutMusician of the year from OutMusic! I was also nominated for Best Album (female) and Best Out Song. (See www.outmusic.com) It's such a thrill to be recognized for my work! Later on in June I had a wonderful gig at Southern Maine Gay Pride in Portland. When the festival was rained out, the organizers moved my show to Sisters, the local lesbian bar. Everyone was so nice. They didn't have a sound system good for live music but someone happened to have a small guitar amp in their car. A long mike cord was run from the DJ booth, taped to the ceiling with duct tape. When the mike stand didn't work well, it too was taped up. It's amazing what a few dykes and a lot of duct tape can accomplish. Other than all that, I've been home, writing songs, preparing for Women In Harmony, gardening and teaching. I have a couple of local gigs coming up - Sunday I'll be at the Six String CafŽ in Cary (a benefit for Independent Animal Rescue) and July 7 I'll be at the Festival for the Eno. More details below. The gig I had in Fuquay-Varina for June 28 has been canceled. I'll go out on tour in September, after I harvest the tomatoes from my garden and my dog is done digging up the pepper plants. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 2. Getting money to ALL of the victims of 9/11 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Bush Administration is at it again. They're trying to withhold benefits to some of the gay families devastated by the tragedies of 9/11. A friend of mine told me about a friend who is close to someone who may lose her house because her lover was killed in the Pentagon 9/11. Here's a message from her, without their full names because I want to protect their privacy: > i heard from p yesterday and she is not doing well financially or mentally. > she is suffering the loss of s greatly. we have to make this damned > government at least allow her to stay in the home that they bought together. > if they can spend money for a memorial at the pentagon they can fulfill ¯ her last wishes. till later, j This is just one of the families denied benefits. Folks I am outraged!!! I hope you are too - contact your senators and representatives and tell them to wise up. Are you getting this newsletter twice? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Every once in a while, AOL burps when I send out the newsletter, causing some of you to get it twice. Sorry 'bout that. Don't worry, you aren't on the mailing list twice. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 6. Linda Tillery needs our help ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ This long time women's music performer, teacher and director of the Cultural Heritage Choir must take four months off from work due to health problems. She'll be missing a big chunk of her income. To help her out, contact Linda Tillery, PO Box 11195, Oakland, CA, 94611, callcamila@aol.com. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 7. Assistance for Kelly Conway too ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Kelly Conway, an independent musician and former producer of the day stage at the National Women's Music Festival, is in dire need of financial help due to a serious illness. See the letter below that I recently recieved from the producer of the festival. ********** I'm sure you all remember the former producer of our Day Stages at Festival, the sweet and funny Kelly Conway. Well, she is having major health challenges and is in need of surgery, but she has no insurance. Because she has been so ill, she cannot work and is earning little to no money. She is in urgent need of financial assistance from her friends and sisters. please send any donations directly to her at the address I've listed. Also, she tells me that it's possible to donate blood specifically in her name, so that's another way anyone can help. Her blood type is O positive, but you don't have to be that particular blood type to donate in her name - she'll get credit for it anyway. If you are not able to send money to her or donate blood, please keep her in your prayers and thoughts. Feel free to pass this on to anyone else who may want to offer help, even if they don't know Kelly. Thanks to all! I know Kelly will appreciate all the help we can give her - in any form it comes. Joyce Warner-Stone P.S. A week after Kelly sent her original email to me, she had an emergency blood transfusion and almost died because of the county's insistance that a hemoglobin count of 8 was fine. Had they helped her when she asked them to, she wouldn't have almost died and had to spend 3 times the taxpayers' money sitting in the emergency room. The hospital staff literally told Kelly's partner that she was probably not going to live through this. Kelly's address: P.O. Box 454 Rio Linda, CA 95673 ~~~~~~~~~~ 8. Photos ~~~~~~~~~~ If you have photos taken at my performances (they don't have to be of me), I'd love to see them. Email your jpg to tsunmaiinc@aol.com or snail mail to 4201 University Dr., Ste. 102, Box 417, Durham, NC, 27707. I'll put some photos on my website and in a photo album I'll carry to gigs. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 9. Are you a gay music fan? Check out Queer Music Heritage! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Queer Music Heritage is a cool radio show hosted by JD Doyle that broadcasts from Houston. You can also hear it on the net at www.queermusicheritage.com. JD's a gay music collector so you can find out about gay music, including historical recordings. Jones "My dog is worried about the economy because Alpo is up to $3 a can. That's almost $21 in dog money." - Joe Weinstein Take care everyone and don't let your dog go shopping without you. -- Jamie Jamie Anderson Singer - Songwriter - Parking Lot Attendant *** Touring nationally for over a decade *** http://www.jamieanderson.com http://www.mp3.com/jamieanderson 4201 University Dr., Ste. 102, Durham, NC, 27707 tsunamiinc@aol.com Order Jamie's recordings!
