I love personal notes from fans, though, and try to answer every email. Welcome and general blabbing ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Hey everyone! Wow, what a month October was É I hardly know where to start. I did some fun gigs in NY, MD and New England. Shared the stage with some awesome performers including Wishing Chair (www.terrakin.com) and Peter Mayer. I'd never heard Peter Mayer before and whoa! I haven't seen someone play guitar like that since Michael Hedges. Introspective songs with some wow guitar work. I saw some people walk away from his CD table with every CD of his. Same thing with Wishing Chair. Do I know how to pick 'em or what? I had a wonderful gig at the Highlands Inn (www.highlandsinn-nh.com). Situated on many acres of beautiful countryside, the inn is comfortable with many beautiful rooms (each with their own bathroom), two jacuzzi's, a couple of common rooms (one with a fireplace) and great breakfasts. AND it's only a 15 minute drive from Vermont so if you're planning a civil union, have your honeymoon at the inn. This last Saturday, I had the great pleasure of emceeing the big Cris Williamson and Holly Near concert here in Durham. Amazing show. I'd been to a peace rally that day, kinda bummed about Shrub Jr.and company and really needed a lift. Damn, did I get it! . It was just like the old days, with people joyfully singing along, crying through the inspirational songs and greeting old friends at intermission. Close to the end of the show, Teresa Trull joined them, then June Millington. They did some songs together -- it was like a women's music festival -- then invited little ol' me on stage to sing Ferron's "Testimony" and Cris' lullaby song. The crowd of several hundred leapt to the their feet at the end, giving us so much incredible energy. The whole shindig was a benefit for Ladyslipper (www.ladyslipper.org) and I hope they made lots of bucks. Cris and Holly are doing more shows together. (www.criswilliamson.com and www.hollynear.com) Get to one! Tell 'em Jamie sent you. Tonight I'm going to see Melissa Ferrick and Edie Cary. Yeow!! I recently heard that I'll be in the contest at the South Florida Folk Festival in January. It's an honor to even be chosen to compete, given the few hundred audition tapes they get. There'll be more about the festival in later newsletters. I'm currently reading "Stupid White Men" by Michael Moore. It should be required reading for everyone in this country. Go see his new movie "Bowling for Columbine." It tackles the topic of violence in America in Moore's usual satirical way. ~~~~~~~~ 4. VOTE ~~~~~~~~ Do NOT forget to vote on Tuesday. We don't want the Republicans to have a majority in Congress. Both Strom Thurmond AND Jesse Helms are leaving - let's not blow it and elect someone almost as bad. Other races are just as important. If you need information about the candidates and issues, check out www.moveon.org. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 5. Cute animal story contest winners ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Thanks to everyone who entered the contest. The winner is Rima Kittner! She wins a Jamie Anderson CD and her story in this newsletter. Runners up are Marianne Barlow, Karen Lea Rose and Christy. They all get their stories published in the newsletter. Here's Rima's story: Scruffy is his name -- a Dandy Dinmont terrier with a mind of his own. He lives two doors down with Pat and Rob. Whenever Pat takes him for a walk, he stops in at my house for a Beggin' Strip and some belly rubbing. He likes to play in water too much -- when Pat waters the garden, he gets very muddy, so a few weeks ago, while she was watering, she told Scruffy to go sit on the porch, which he did, under protest. She went around the side of the house for a minute or two, and when she got back, he was gone. She looked all around the yard -- no Scruffy. She went into the house -- no Scruffy. Now thoroughly concerned, she started walking up the street, calling him, and found him -- sitting on my front porch! I guess he was hoping I'd come home and give him a handout. His expression said "Well, you didn't say WHOSE front porch, did you?" And Karen Lea's: Upon meeting my girlfriend's 4 year old grandson, I asked if he had a dog. "Yes" says he. I asked the dog's name to which Austin replied, "his name is Charlie but we call him Get Down." Marianne and Christy's stories will be in next month's newsletter. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 6. Carla Ulbrich, professional smart aleck ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I want to let y'all know about a great singer-songwriter-guitarist, Carla Ulbrich. If you like my music, you'll probably love hers. Like me, she does a fair number of funny tunes. Dr. Demento says, "Ulbrich has her own spunky style and sings beautifully. 'What If Your Girlfriend Was Gone' is a masterpiece." She's shared stages with many including Cheryl Wheeler, Vance Gilbert and yes, Twiggy the Water Skiing Squirrel. Hey, she must be more famous than me. We'll be doing some gigs together next year (along with Deirdre Flint). Check out www.carlau.com. You can sign up for her mailing list there. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 7. Survey results ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Thanks to everyone who returned the survey I ran in earlier newsletters. I thought you'd be interested in the results. I heard from 79 of you in 65 different cities (that's about a 5% return - pretty good for something like this). Most of you own at least one of my CDs, many own all of them! Most of you heard about my music through a friend or at a festival. You listen to live music at coffeehouses or clubs mostly. 46% of you read Lesbian Connection. Other popular periodicals include local papers, Girlfriend and Curve. Almost none of you read music-related magazines like Sing Out and Performing Singer-Songwriter. That kind of surprised me but I guess it shouldn't. Like you, I'd rather listen to music than read about it. 71% of you want me to put out an all-comedy album next but almost as many said they'd be happy with any kind of recording. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 8. I wanna play the Michigan festival. You can help! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ While I've had the pleasure to teach intensive workshops at Michigan (bellydance and songwriting), I've never been asked to do my music on stage. I've sent them audition material every year since 1990 and I figure it's about time they let me in. You can help by requesting me. You'll have to write them the old fashioned way since they prefer not to use email: Michigan Women's Music Festival, PO Box 7430, Berkeley, CA, 94707. Thanks! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 9. I'm in a book! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ My song "Dark Chocolate" and a photo are in "Femme/Butch, New Considerations of the Way We Want to Go," edited by M. Gibson and D. Meem, Harrington Park Press. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 10. Song requests ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ My memory bites. I'm happy to take song requests at shows but it's better to email me ahead of time at tsunamiinc@aol.com. Tell me the song(s) and what show you're attending. ~~~~~~~~~~ 10. Photos ~~~~~~~~~~ If you have photos taken at my concerts (they don't have to be of me), I'd love to see them. E photos to tsunamiinc@aol.com (send small pictures please) or mail: 4201 University Dr., Ste. 102, Box 417, Durham, NC, 27707. If you emailed me anything before September 18, they were lost in my computer crash. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 11 .The Ending Quotes ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "When the going gets rough, the average get conservative." - Henry Rollins, punk rock spoken word poet "When you have these news anchors on television, they should be flashing the amount of money they make. People should understand the economic strata they come from. They represent such a minority in this country and they interview their friends, basically." - Amy Goodman, host of Pacifica Radio's Democracy Now! Don't be average and don't believe everything you see on TV.
