Welcome and general blabbing ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Hey everyone! This edition of the newsletter finds me still on tour. I'm writing from the wilds of my mother's living room, where I've turned one of her couches into a mini office with papers and notebooks strewn over one side and my butt on the other. My guitar rests on the window seat behind me and my new mandolin behind this couch -- I've had a boatload of fun with that little thing, cranking through fiddle tunes and driving whoever is home crazy. It's really great to be back in the Southwest. There's nothing like that big sky to make me smile. And the sunsets! Every evening is a treat. The night before last the clouds were a brilliant pink in a deepening blue sky. I've had some tres cool gigs in Texas, Arizona and Colorado. There's been a lot of driving but the scenery is so gorgeous, I almost didn't mind. The mountains in Colorado and the wide desert, full of mesquite and saguaros, is something to see. The snow added a beautiful quiet in nothern Colorado but it was a drag to drive in. It would have been impossible to get my two wheel drive truck up the driveway to my housing in Poudre Canyon so we loaded up my stuff in an all wheel drive vehicle to get me there, leaving my truck in the parking lot of the performance venue. In the morning I found a couple inches of snow on my little truck. Inside was a water bottle, frozen solid. Did I mention that it was ten degrees that morning? Driving out of the quiet canyon, snow sprinkled on the trees like powdered sugar, I forgot to be irritated at the weather. There's a lot of exciting things to tell you about - I've got a bunch of classes scheduled for early next year, the new Queerstock CD is out and I've been booked at the National Women's Music Festival again! Women in Harmony, my music camp for women, happens in mid July. There's a bit of information about it, plus a couple of pictures (with more to come) at www.jamieanderson.com. Jamie Anderson CDs make great gifts for the holidays! Wouldn't Mom love "Menstrual Tango?" www.ladyslipper.org I've got four additional gigs on this tour. I'll be in Moab, UT this Friday. I'm excited about more great scenery and I hope to get in some hiking. I'll catch some gigs in New Mexico on my way home to North Carolina. More details above. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 3. January and February classes for musicians and dancers in NC ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I'm teaching a whole slew of classes in the NC triangle cities area in early 2003. Telling Your Own Story, Duke Short Course, Durham, February 16, 1-4 pm, www.learnmore.duke.edu/shortcourse/index.html, lfere@duke.edu Through games and exercises, you'll explore some of your memories as inspiration for composing meaningful songs lyrics and/or using it in other kinds of creative work, such as journal writing, storytelling, non-fiction or fiction writing, or visual art. This is not a therapy group, but an exploration of the ways our own memories can be used in creative work. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 4. Queer Heritage website ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ If you're interested in the history of queer music, you've got to check out www.queermusicheritage.com. JD Doyle is a DJ in Houston who is an expert on the topic, presenting some great shows featuring GLBT musicians. All three years of his show are now archived on his site including a January 2002 interview with me and photos from my November Austin performance. There are pictures and all kinds of information about other artists as well. I could spend hours at this website. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 5. Outvoice Music chart - please vote! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Outvoice is a great website devoted to queer music, including a monthly chart. Please vote for my newest album, Listen: www.outvoice.net. Bookmark this page and vote every month! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 6. More cute animal story contest winners ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The winner (Rima) and one finalist (Karen Lea) appeared in the last issue of the newlsetter. (If you missed it, it's archived at www.jamieanderson.com.) Here are the other two finalists in the contest. The first one is from Christy, aka Chilipepper: Picture this, A humid and sticky morning. The window was cracked....a curious cat thinks he can fly...He tries. Unfortunately, he is proven wrong. With nothing but asphalt beneath, he falls 4 stories. Luckily, he lives but with a broken paw, toe and ruptured eardrum. And if that is not torture enough, the vet puts a bright, neon pink splint on my cat! I guess someone had to be the fem of the house. ************ And this one is from Marianne Barlow: Gregory, the long-haired grey cat, always ate his dinner on the kitchen counter. Joe, the wiry black-haired mongrel dog always ate his dinner on the kitchen floor. When they were both young, their mother unintentionally trained Joe to bark and make a ruckus at the cat as he ate. She did this by putting Gregory's bowl on the floor for Joe to lick when the cat had finished eating. One day when Gregory was eating his food, Joe began to bark, as had become customary. Gregory, becoming annoyed, looked around for his mom to help him fend off this uncouth beast. Seeing no one, he took matters into his own paws. Gregory turned around and peered down at the dog, who had put his paws up on the cabinet doors and was barking much closer to Gregory's sensitive ears. Gregory bided his time. He walked back and forth across the kitchen counter, all the time watching the dog. When Joe finally released his grip on the cabinets and had all four feet on the floor again, Gregory leapt into action. He spotted an egg on the kitchen counter and quickly batted it off. He watched it land squarely on Joe's head, then, victorious, turned back to lick his own dinner bowl. I swear this is a true story. ************ Thanks to everyone who entered the contest! Look for more contests in upcoming newsletters. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 7. Put a lesbian in the white house ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ No, I don't mean Hillary Clinton. Check out www.lisaforpresident.com. My friend Lisa Rogers (from the infamous and very funny Therapy Sisters) figures it's never too early to campaign for our highest office. On the site, you'll find her top ten reasons to put a lesbian in the white house. Here are a few of my favorites: we haven't had a lesbian first lady - lately, she's not a stupid white man, and who wouldn't want to work for 4 years, get laid off and collect unemployment the rest of your life? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 8. Queerstock CD is now available! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ A 30 track, 2 CD compilation of gay artists is now available, including a song from moi. All proceeds benefit queer youth organizations. You can get it at www.cdbaby.com/queerstock. Also, check out www.queerstock.org. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 9. Does your cat work for the CIA? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Apparently there's at least one who does. You can read her stories as well as hear my song "When Cats Take Over the World" at www.arlev.clara.net/kitbits18h.htm. If you've got some time, read the other stories too. They're a stitch. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 10. Help me get booked at festivals ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Many of the festivals are deciding now who to book for next year. If you'd like to drop a line to one or more, it would really help me out. Please tell them that you might come to their event if they were to feature me. And don't lie, 'k? Thanks!! Great musician photos website ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I had the pleasure of performing at a house concert in the Dallas area run by a fabulous photographer, Diane Litke. Her website is crammed with great photos she's taken of many performers including Melissa Ferrick, Edie Carey, me and others. www.bonedoc1.net. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 11 .The Ending Quotes ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ My file of favorite quotes is at home, so I'll rely on the quotes I carry around with me - the buttons on my purse. Unfortunately, I can't tell you who said these: "Guns don't kill people, they just make it real easy." "Peace is patriotic." May we all walk in peace. -- Jamie Jamie Anderson Singer - Songwriter - Parking Lot Attendant *** Touring nationally for over 15 years *** http://www.jamieanderson.com http://www.mp3.com/jamieanderson 4201 University Dr., Ste. 102, Durham, NC, 27707 tsunamiinc@aol.com Order Jamie's recordings!
